I feel like Parks and Recreation let me down by forcing April to have children. Still not over that.

Writers can't "force" a character to do anything. They can only write them doing something that you don't like. The writers did not put a gun to April's head and say "have kids" because April does not exist God damn how many times do we have to have this conversation.

Hard same.
If there's a fifty-fifty chance that any given character in all of fiction would do something:
a) it happens ==> and some fans whine.
b) it doesn't happen ==> and another group of fans whine just as much.

Put them all together in the same online environment, providing there's enough debate about what actually happened...

...you'll eventually get a flame war.

Well, literally the writers force a character to do anything they're written to do exactly because they aren't real and therefore do not have free will of their own. So OP checks out bud.

And writers can make characters do things that are out-of-character if those things contradict/don't match up with how the character has previously been portrayed.
