I also have a vaguely related issue in that I don't mind reading about fucked up characters "healing" and atoning for what they've done through a relationship...but it's rare that an author can be bothered to put the major legwork in to make it believable. Sometimes it's like they're desperate to get to the fluff and don't really care about exploring the dark psychology behind everything. I'm there for the darkness, not tooth rotting fluff taking up 80% of the fic.

I'm actually not really into dark ships, at all. There needs to be a basic level of redemption in order for me to be into it. But its rare that people are willing to put in the work to genuinely sell a dark character's redemption.
I tried reading some Reylo, back a year or so ago, and just couldn't find fic that worked for me, because the amount of work it would take to "redeem" Kylo convincingly was just too much.
