I also have a vaguely related issue in that I don't mind reading about fucked up characters "healing" and atoning for what they've done through a relationship...but it's rare that an author can be bothered to put the major legwork in to make it believable.

This is me, 100%.

I'm actually not really into dark ships, at all. There needs to be a basic level of redemption in order for me to be into it. But its rare that people are willing to put in the work to genuinely sell a dark character's redemption.

I tried reading some Reylo, back a year or so ago, and just couldn't find fic that worked for me, because the amount of work it would take to "redeem" Kylo convincingly was just too much.
