Agreed. It's... pretty disheartening, really. I get that she's definitely kooky and if she's using a lot of unpaid interns as manual labor then that's not great. But she's not even close to being as much of a villain as "Doc" Antle (who's a creepy sexual predator as well as an animal abuser) and Joe Exotic.

It's not even fair to claim she treats her workers "badly" because the volunteers don't get paid. Do people know what volunteering means?! Those are bored wealthy people. If they get tired of it, they can quit.

Unlike the other guys' roadside zoos run by drugged up sex cult teenagers who literally have nowhere else to go.

This. I've volunteered at nonprofits before. I've also interned before, as a law student. The only internships that were ever paid were the ones at high powered law firms. The ones at nonprofits were always unpaid unless you got a scholarship.

There's a difference between volunteers and interns, though.

Neither are paid traditionally. The interns are provided accommodations. It is a nice shared apartment (not full of bugs and such). They are also given a weekly $50 food stipend (so not picking expired Walmart meat off the back of a truck).

Interns of nonprofits are generally not paid either. You get work experience, a notch on your resume, and a reference while helping the nonprofit.

There is, but I still don't hold it against an animal sanctuary for having unpaid internships (to my knowledge they get housing and food allowances though). It is ridiculously expensive to keep big cats.
