Dang. This is almost a copy of my secret that I submitted this week!

Thank you, OP. This, so much this. So, so, so much this. It is so disheartening, depressing, and disgusting to see how Carol is talked about. And any time I comment defending her and Big Cat, I get a dozen comments screaming all the rumors and insults about her and then insulting me for daring to disagree with the pile on. And as Jackson Galaxy pointed out in a great video, the show did a great disservice by not using the platform to tell people ways they can fight the treatment of wild cats. Instead it went for sensationalizing and demonizing of the one subject actually doing something good.

This was me. For some reason Dreamwidth suddenly lost my login cookie.

Are people really turning on Big Cat Rescue-- an important and well-run organization-- because they're ROOTING for the asshole animal abusers on Tiger King??

That's SO disheartening, oh man... I mean I knew that show was trash and it would be too upsetting to me to watch it, and I try to tune out a lot of the talk about it, but that's beyond gross that that's what people are taking from this.

Agreed. It's... pretty disheartening, really. I get that she's definitely kooky and if she's using a lot of unpaid interns as manual labor then that's not great. But she's not even close to being as much of a villain as "Doc" Antle (who's a creepy sexual predator as well as an animal abuser) and Joe Exotic.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-15 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not even fair to claim she treats her workers "badly" because the volunteers don't get paid. Do people know what volunteering means?! Those are bored wealthy people. If they get tired of it, they can quit.

Unlike the other guys' roadside zoos run by drugged up sex cult teenagers who literally have nowhere else to go.

It genuinely boggles my mind that the general consensus of this documentary wasn't "All these people are horrible in different ways" but instead "FUCK CAROLE BASKINS"

It shouldn't even be "all these people are horrible in different ways." Carole Baskin is not remotely the same as the rest of the people. She and her charity genuinely help animals. She's a bit cooky, yes, and in the beginning didn't know what she's doing. But they got it figured out and now know what they are doing and are an amazing charity doing a lot of good work.

"All these people are horrible in different ways"

That was my general takeaway from the show, yes.

And they all think they're the better than the others.

I am super uncomfortable with this show having a "fandom". I know that's where we are right now but. Yeaaah.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this :/

(Anonymous) 2020-04-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this a show worth watching? I'm on the fence about it but almost all of my Facebook friends love it.

NO. Do not watch.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-15 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. If you like reality show train wrecks and have a high tolerance for hearing about animal abuse.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you view at reality tv, it is entertaining.

As someone who only consumed the podcast, i am aghast at the reaction to the Netflix show. They really fucked up presenting the story when people are rooting for Joe and "Doc" and demonizing Carol.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They definitely fucked up, but a lot of the reaction is down to good old fashioned misogyny.

BCR is an amazing organization that does good things for big cats that have been abused all over the world. Also, they rescue and rehabilitate injured bobcats and return them to the wild (something that is so much fun to watch in progression) and baby bobcats that are found are raised without human interaction (except for brief vet visits, and even then only touched by gloves or under anesthesia) and set free and it's so freaking cute watching these murderfluffs jumping on top of stuffed animals and learning to stalk live prey, I can't even tell you. The sad thing is, as soon as they get released into their original habitat they disappear so quickly into the brush. But that's just and right. It means they have not been domesticated in any way. Humans are horrible, evil creatures to be avoided at all costs.

BCR does it all right.

You made me remember the tribute video they made of Raindance when she had to be put to sleep and now I'm sad despite the song was a happy one in the video.

I read the other day that apparently Investigation Discovery is making a sequel about her husband's disappearance. It will be interesting to see if they stay impartial or simply paint her as a murderer.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
She is just as bad and I am not sorry I have done my research she sells merch she sedates tigers and makes the paint while they are asleep takes there paws for art I am not on any side doc carole or Joe's they are all horrible people who are exposing big cats for profits, wow she is non profit but is actually making one off cats, she probably did have something to do with her husband disappearce. I am not in any Fandom I find it compelling as hell though, and all are so comically horrible that it's laughable. We should not be on any persons side we should only be on the big cats side and that's sad and it's not like all the cats can go back to the wild, since they are from captivity so stop making her the villain stop make her the hero they all are bad and move on damn it.

BCR has a terrible reputation in the accredited zoo world, and a lot of that has to do with how much she shits on any other facility that keeps animals in human care. And when she said she never needed to pay people because someone would always do the job for free, I actually screeched at the TV haha. That attitude is why zoo work is such a homogenous, not diverse, privileged field: if you're lucky enough to have a paid animal care job, you could afford to work for free for YEARS.

Regardless, everyone in this documentary is severely mentally ill at BEST, legit rapists and monsters at worst. Although I personally and professionally deeply dislike Baskins I have to agree that a lot of this is severely sexist. The show has a severely misogynistic bias.

I'll never stop feeling bad for that poor libertarian kid, though. God. No one deserves to go through that.
