FOH

(honestly, it's been such a long time since we've had this particular troll, but still, FOH)

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Front of house?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck outta here

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes MUCH more sense, thank you.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
glad I'm not the only one whose mind goes there first

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Pointing out misogyny is trolling?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Misogyny is not the reason people dislike Nurse Ratched and it is trolling to imply that it is.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's misogyny that she gets more hatred than McMurphy when he jokes about how he raped an underage girl (“Said she was seventeen, Doc, and she was plenty willin'.” “So willin', in fact, I took to sewing my pants shut.” ) and calls a black orderly a “goddamned motherfucking n****er."

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing I've said indicates that McMurphy is a hero in any way, and you know this. The principal reason that people dislike Ratched is because she's a mental health professional who orders the non-consensual lobotomy of a patient under her care because of her personal dislike of that patient.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Because he strangled and sexually assaulted her, you mean?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Let me repeat again that I'm not defending McMurphy as a good guy, since apparently that's your only go-to move here. Ratched was a nurse, with a duty of care and intense power over the people in her care, who used that power in a deeply improper, harmful, callous, and ultimately evil way, and that's the reason that people don't like her.

And she did a lot of evil for a lot of people besides McMurphy.

This. There is not some rule where there can only be one awful person per movie. McMurphy is a terrible person. He's not a hero. TBH he's the reason I can't actually enjoy the movie. But Ratched is the one with the duty of care. And she harms more than just McMurphy. She's worse because she had a duty and breached it. She's worse because her patients put their trust in her as their nurse and she abused it with her evil actions.

No one is saying McMurphy is a good guy. No one. If anyone ever does, they are morons who haven't watched the movie. McMurphy is a bad guy too. But there is a reason Ratched is the villain and that reason isn't that she's a woman. The reason is that she's a nurse with a duty of care that she abuses. The reason is that she's worse.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You're not following here. Sure, Ratched is shitty, I don't really think anyone's ever going to say otherwise, but McMurphy is lionized and held up as the hero of the story, when in fact they're about equal. She takes an unfair proportion of the hatred that should be leveled at these characters principally because she's female and does bad things to men.

In another example, the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket is not shown even a micron of the hate that Ratched is, and he's directly responsible for the mental breakdown and violent suicide of one of his recruits. He is a bad person, he abuses his power in deeply improper, harmful, callous, and ultimately evil ways because he dislikes Gomer Pyle. And yet-- not even close to the same kind of vitriol aimed at Ratched. There is a reason for that. It is misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
To the extent that there's anything sympathetic about McMurphy, it's entirely as a result of him (despite his many flaws and generally being a shitty person) being put in the situation of helping out a group of people who have been thoroughly brutalized by Ratched. The reality is that he is in a somewhat sympathetic role relative to McMurphy, even though he's a deeply shitty person, because he's in this fucked up situation largely created by Ratched. And I think to minimize the enormously shitty things that Ratched does because the mental health patients under her care are men is terrible.

Also, Full Metal Jacket is a terrible example here because no one is remembering the drill sergeant in the context of the full movie. No one remembers anything about that movie other than the one drill sergeant speech, and people remember that almost exclusively because it's a bravura performance from R. Lee Ermey. So it's just a ridiculous, ridiculous comparison. And even if that weren't the case, your argument would not demonstrate that people hate Ratched too much, just that people go too easy on the drill sergeant. Ridiculous. Nonsense.

First, I'm loving all the anti-Tiger King secrets. Second, though, this one isn't as good as the others. The comparison doesn't work because in that movie, both characters were awful and the male character being a rapist doesn't change the fact that the nurse was an abusive, awful nurse to not just him but the other patients as well. Whereas Carole Baskin is a good person doing good work and the Tiger King is the one entirely wrong.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
But Ratched still gets more of the hatred even though McMurphy is far worse.

The same thing happened with Walt and Skyler in Breaking Bad, or Trump and Hillary during the 2016 presidential election.

Except no, McMurphy wasn't worse. Ratched was far worse, though I'm personally not a fan of the movie because it is hard to root for McMurphy given his past.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, sure, much more people hated Hillary than Trump, that's why he won the popular vote... Wait what? He didn't? Well whoops. Your argument might just be bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
that Hillary was still neck and neck with someone like Trump is proof enough.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's also a matter of POLITICS - people will not just vote based on who the like more but also the party they prefer. Which makes this a really faulty comparison. Do you think Republican voters would have suddenly switched to voting Democrat if the candidate for the Republicans had been a woman?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - I think a hell of a lot of the "fence-sitters" would've been way, way more inclined to go Dem if they'd had a male candidate to vote for, yes. And I think most of those fence sitters would have been way less easily swayed to think badly of a male candidate. I honestly kind of can't believe you're even arguing this.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-18 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually.

Many registered Republicans who voted for Obama over McCain allegedly did so because Sarah Palin was kind of batshit. And she's a rational, intelligent human being compared to the shitshow they voted for in 2016, who, let us not forget, only became a Republican in 2009 to protest the black guy in the White House.

So if you don't think that a significant chunk of Republican voters wouldn't have voted for a male Democrat over a female Republican, you haven't been paying attention. Yes, the Republicans who are rich enough to be voting to keep their tax loopholes or evangelical enough to be voting to ban queers and abortion will vote Republican no matter what, but there are enough who fall outside that group to make a difference.
