I'm getting a cross between the mates vibe of Ten and Donna or Twelve and Bill and the Family vibe of Eleven, Amy, Rory, and River. The best of both worlds for me.

Compared to those groups though, I don't get the same vibes at all. The rest actually got a chance to be friends.

Okay, sorry you aren't feeling it. Not sure what you mean by the last sentence because I think they're her friends as much as the others were his. Agree to disagree I guess.

It just feels like we're TOLD they're her friends, but they haven't had a chance to BE her friends yet--Donna, Amy, Rory, Bill, they all had the chance to change the Doctor's mind on something, affect their outcomes, give support that's actually accepted, etc. I can't think of anything that the Fam has done that's actually had an EFFECT on the Doctor, other than just be there.

Hmmmm. I guess I don't feel like there needs to be mind changing to be friendship? They're there for each other. They've each gone through rougher moments and been there for each other. they've stuck it out with each other, they've listened and been sounding boards for each other, and they've been willing to do anything for each other. That all says friendship to me.

But that could be done by literally anyone, even a temporary companion like Kate Lethbridge-Stewart can count as "being there". Has there been anything so far that could ONLY have been done by Yaz or Graham or Ryan, specifically? All of the other companions, I can think of specific ways that they react to and accomplish things; not so much this group, as much as I DO like them and WANT to know them more.

Why does every companion have to be special and unique? I don't always want that? Honestly it got old that every companion was the only one in all the universe at something for everyone else in New Who. It is refreshing to me to have ordinary people who are ordinary friends of the Doctor just hanging out and travelling around in the Tardis having adventures together.

I didn't say anything about being special or unique in the whole universe--just unique as ordinary PEOPLE, which most/all of the companions are. If I were to try writing fic of this group, I don't know where I'd start for characterization beyond "Ryan has problems with physical challenges and Graham is grandfatherly". I need more than that to define who a character is, even if they are just ordinary.
