Apart from fanfics tagged "Not Steve friendly" or "Not Team Cap friendly", I didn't see much of anything that could be called Steve/Team Cap bashing. At least not nearly at the same level of bashing as the one Tony's and Team Iron Man's fans had to witness since AOU (and sometimes before that). I've seen negative posts about Steve/Team Cap, yes, but negativity and bashing or not identical. I'm not saying that the bashing for Steve and Team Cap doesn't exist at all, but that I believe it mustn't be as overboard as you think it is, if I've still yet to come across much of it (and I've explored a lot of MCU blogs, sites and forums). I've yet to see anti-Steves be rude enough to left the kind of over the top comments anti-Tonys leave on the regular in people's askbox (comparing Tony to a supervilain, a murderer, Trump, a pedophile, an homophobe and so on and so on).

I've seen a fair amount of Steve-bashing in my corner of fandom, usually in fanfic. But I've also seen quite a lot of Tony-bashing. And as you say, the Tony bashing is often more over the top. The Steve bashing tends to be in the vein of "Steve is selfish, self-righteous, and a horrible friend; Tony deserved better." Whereas the Tony bashing I see is often like, "Tony is practically a super villain, he wants to enslave the world, he's almost as bad as Thanos."

I very much disagree with all forms of bashing, especially of Steve and Tony. I love them both and think they're both big damn heroes.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of any bashing either, it's often tend to oversimplify characters or issues, so I tend not to find it very interesting. Morever, I'm a big fan of redemption and reconciliation. But, as long as the bashing can be avoided, people can vent all they want. My point wasn't that there wasn't any Steve's bashing, more than there probably wasn't more Steve's bashing than Tony's, as OP seems to believe. Like you've said : it depends where you hang out, the net is a vast place and the MCU a pretty big fandom.

OP here

I mostly see it on AO3. The authors are almost always good about tagging it. It's just the sheer amount of this. Good to know about no Steve fans bashing on Tumblr or at least it's not bad. Now I'm kinda glad that I don't visit MCU Tumblr pages.

But that's the whole point of fanfic??

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand. You want people not to write fic bashing Steve even if they tag it well? You want them to ignore canon and just...not do the thing that is the whole purpose of fanfic, which is to fix what bothers them about canon?

I mean, I'm sorry if you like this particular character in this instance, and I don't have a pony in this race, but, e.g., I really love Daredevil and people have been bashing him on Foggy's behalf since Nelson vs. Murdock but I will defend their right to do so regardless. Canon irks them. They are fixing it.

Nowhere has OP said anything about people's right to post Steve-bashing fic. They are not campaigning to become mayor of fandom and outlaw Steve-bashing. People's freedoms are not being threatened.

OP simply wishes there wasn't so much of it. It rubs them the wrong way. A lot of people feel that way about character bashing, and it's okay for them to feel that way. They're not doing anything wrong.

Re: But that's the whole point of fanfic??

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying they are. I'm saying their statements are contradictory and ridiculous. We aren't in fandom to ignore canon. We either work against it or with it, but it's there. And they said people are good at tagging, so why are they even noticing the bashing in the first place unless they are going looking for it?

Re: But that's the whole point of fanfic??

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because I don't want my fics to spend so much time on Steve, Team Cap and CW. Anon above got it right. I just would like to have more fic to read that explores the themes I enjoy.

Oh, well then. Anything else you want? Jeez.

Ignore them, nonny. They apparently don't understand that when people feel things, and want things, and have opinions, they are not automatically fascist dictators forcing others to bend to their will.

We aren't in fandom to ignore canon. We either work against it or with it, but it's there.

I mean, I ignore canon all the time. But that aside, people have feelings and opinions about things. Your argument seems to boil down to "It's ridiculous to have opinions and feelings about things other people do," which is just a really weird argument. Of course people have opinions and feelings about things other people do! As long as they're not being rude and hurtful in how they express those opinions and feelings, it's fine.

And frankly, character-bashing is a particularly normal thing for someone in fandom to have opinions and feelings about. Have you not been in fandom long?

so why are they even noticing the bashing in the first place unless they are going looking for it?

Uhh, I notice all kinds of stuff I'm not looking for in fandom, all the time. Also, if OP ships a smaller pairing, they may have read all the fic that immediately appeals to them, and be in the "lower your standards" phase.

Personally, I really dislike Steve-bashing, but I've had to swallow my dislike and read around it sometimes in order to have anything to read at all. Do I blame the writer for writing it? No. But is it the kind of thing I'd grouch over in private, to a friend, absolutely.

This person brought their feelings to F!S, which is another totally appropriate thing to do with those feelings, because it's Fandom Secrets. The whole point is sharing feelings and opinions you wouldn't post on your tumblr or wherever.

You missed the point I'm making. "Learn to ignore canon, people." is the secret. The OP seems to be saying, stop writing stories about the canon that bothers you. And I am saying, that's ridiculous. That's the point of fanfic. I'm not saying their feelings on the matter are ridiculous, I'm saying their stated opinion "learn to ignore canon" is ridiculous. Clear? Clear.

Also, it's easy to exclude tags from searches, no matter what the pairing. That's a pretty specious argument.

I'm saying their stated opinion "learn to ignore canon" is ridiculous.

You have entirely misread their secret. They are telling you you've misread their secret. I'm telling you you're misread their secret. It's quite clear you're misread their secret. And yet, here you are.

OP

Learn to ignore stories that bother you, people.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
not-OP

You aren't hanging out in the same spaces I am, then. I've seen quite a lot of over-the-top Steve bashing in my corners of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious : what do you consider Steve's bashing ? I have to say that I disagree with the OP saying Tony's fans were worst than Steve and Natasha's fans after CW.

"learn to ignore canon, people!"

i feel this. even three years ago i'd have been scandalized by such an idea i'm sure. but the more that certain fiction's potential ends up exciting me more than canon disappoints me, i justify sticking around in fandom spaces more and more while ignoring canon haha

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom trumps canon in every sense! Looking at you, Hawaii 5-0 last episode.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you. I LOVE 616!Tony but I am so done with MCU!Tony and therefor pretty much all Fandom!Tony.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I like both MCU and comics Tony. It's like two separate fandoms to me, so I take some time between the two. It's became harder to find comics!Tony fics after the Avengers movies.
