Ooooh, OP, I can empathize!

I mean, I get it, there's a segment of the readership that doesn't care about canon or IC, but there have been times in the past when I've been so annoyed at the "No one writes..." statements that I've changed my icon to a plate of chopped liver.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, I would hate it if this happened to me. Sucks that you have to deal with that person.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Uuuuuuugh, this sounds i n s a n e l y annoying. I'm not really a content creator, except on the privacy of my own computer, but I hate people who go "weh, look at all the writing I do for this fandom" and all their writing is dotpointed "imagine" posts that are so ooc you could overwrite the characters' names with any other character from any other fandom and it would be about the same.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote a daemon AU/His Dark Materials fusion for a specific fandom, and three months later another person wrote a daemon AU/His Dark Materials fusion for the same fandom. I was like, "Oh yay, more of that thing I like!" And then they had a paragraph-long author's note about how no one has done this before and I have to do everything myself around here!! It took a lot of willpower for me not to comment "BITCH" on the story. >:(

I have an unrelated rarepair where the few content creators turn out a lot of fic, but I always feel like it's too cutesy and OOC, so I feel you, OP. (I always focus on the positive when I leave reviews since it's not like I've written anything for the fandom yet.)

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I... Would not have your strength of will, gotta say. I'd be going anon and commenting like "hey asshole, it's been done already, get over yourself!"
Not really productive, though.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
da

That, and I would include a link to my fic as proof! (anon, of course, so as not to look like a dick: "Hey I HAVE read one of these on here before...")

This as me /screaming/! Ugh! The nerve of that persons irritates the hell out of me! Like I get it, they like what they like, but going around like 'woe is me' when it's not even true is grating as hell! Chances are that if the fandom is growing and they're spamming the tags like that might have people taking their OCCness as the 'appropriate' characterization for the paring, I've seen it before which is why I have such a chip on my shoulder about this kind of thing.
Hopefully more people will come around and post things with quality and thought! <3

This is what would annoy the hell out of me. I know, I know. Some people are fine with OoC fics etc. Not me, tbh XD. But what really bothers me is when the new characterization spreads and it seems I can't find fics or even head canons with the characters *I* liked. If it's for a really small ship it's even worse.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Absolutely. I've had my fandom blow up with basically having a 'reading school' variation be the new and true interpretation of my ship that I adored, and like, I loved the sudden jump in fic count, but when I actually started looking, there was literally nothing I found that I could read.
It happens way too often that an idea becomes more important than the characterization. When new people join fandom they see the most popular impression of a ship they like, and believe they need to match that in order to become popular or recognized. Not every time, but enough to overshadow the few who write true to canon, imo. Bleh. /rant

A lot of people like AUs, and some people have low standards for writing quality, and both of those things are fine. What’s annoying to you may not be annoying to others.

But I agree that them tooting their own horn and acting like nobody else is writing for the pairing is really shitty and would piss me off big time.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't necessarily mind the OOC AUs all that much if she didn't pretend that she is now more or less the the one and only BNF authority in charge of the ship whom everyone agrees with.

That is *very* annoying!

And secret maker - please can you share your source for the art? It's beautiful!

OP

I'm not entirely sure because most of the pages it links back to are Russian image collection sites but it might be by Ibuki Satsuki.

OH, those are gorgeous! Thank you so much.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You're very welcome! This artist has some pretty awesome artworks in general.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ohh that sounds so aggravating.

I ship a LOT of rarepairs in a lot of small fandoms, and it's hard when there's not a lot of content, but I'd take my 'two people write for this really well and that's it' over someone acting like putting out a bunch of AU 'imagines' represents the greatest contribution. Even when those things aren't OOC, sometimes the canon setting is an important part of what makes a fandom special! And sometimes a ship's canon history is a huge part of why they WORK together. Taking that away in favor of another coffeeshop can leave a real hollow feeling. And when characters go through specific things in the canon time period, sometimes any modern AU is GOING to feel OOC!

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Yeah I wouldn't even mind the OOC AUs all that much if she didn't pretend that she is now more or less the the one and only BNF authority in charge of the ship whom everyone agrees with. Even without the AUs, I do feel she gets a lot about them wrong/looks at it from a very one-sided "This guy is all flawlessly good and this one is evil" POV that annoys me.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Feeling this so much... Pretty much is happening to my tiny fandom recently, you blatantly get ignored if you've been there for years. And it's always the new ones, with the extra ooc fics who get the most attention. I stopped posting mine because of that and it took away a lot of the stress and frustration, but I guess there'll always be a hint of bitterness.
