I believe that any trope can be good if written well by a skilled author. Certainly lots of things are over-done and have a lot of badly-written examples. But a really good author can take an over-done trope and write about it in a unique way and make it interesting. All tropes are fair game to be good with a good writer.

Things wouldn't be tropes if there wasn't something satisfying or meaningful or emotionally desirable or aesthetically pleasing to readers about them in the first place.
