Without going all fandom psychologist LOL... I think the aspect many in that fandom most relate to is the dysfunctional family side of things. And they find Driver hot. IMO AU fics for Reylo, for example, have pretty good quality overall for that reason. At least I've enjoyed a bunch of them. Because what many in that ship really want to write about is being alienated from your family, reconnecting with your family, having no family, searching for family etc. and how that may connect Kylo and Rey.

The legwork for doing redemption in canon is much more difficult. And there's not a lot of canon fics that are really interested in that and in dealing with the atrocious crimes he committed. So I'm mostly staying away from those, since they are often too fluffy. Darkfic that acknowledges how screwed up it all is? Better stuff on offer IMO.
