Related to secret 8, do you read self published books?

Why or why not? And what genre?

I don’t know if Ursula Vernon’s books for adults, published as T. Kingfisher, count; I think they’re more small press than strictly self-pubbed in the “have buddy do a spag read through and upload to Amazon” sense. They’re mostly fairy tale retellings or original fantasy that feel like fairy tale retellings.

No, because I don't know how to find self-published books that I would like.

I don't and it is just because I get all my book recommendations online. If a self published book was recommended, I would read it.

Sure. If it is good. Plus, I used to download a bunch of free self-published erotica books from Amazon when I was broke and looking for stuff to read.

I do. By self published, I mean the girl who had her (pretty good, imo) signed & selfpublished books on a table outside the train station (genre was drama? i guess), and the shitty romance/fantasy /spn(often not too bad) ones on sale on Amazon.

I do it because I want to support people pursuing their dreams (and hope someone will purchase my self published stuff too some day) and bevause sometimes it actually looks good..Often, there's a lot of potential that could have benefited from an editor.

I frequently download books from self published authors offering them for free on either Amazon or their own website (sometimes it'll be free for a limited amount of time, or they'll offer the first in a series for free and then charge for the rest, or they'll give you one for free if you sign up for their newsletter, etc.).

Genre doesn't really matter, I'll just read the synopsis and see what sounds good to me. I'm pretty picky when reading through the summaries, I download probably less than 50% of the ones I read summaries for. Mystery/suspense is probably my favorite genre, but a lot of them sound super generic based on the summary, so I'll skip those. If it's sci-fi or fantasy I'll almost always pass unless there's something about the summary that really grabs me because it's not my favorite genre to begin with and I have less tolerance for mediocre stuff in that category. Sometimes the summary is written in such a way that it seems to suggest who the killer/what the big twist is going to be, and those I almost always download just to see if I interpreted it right. Sometimes a synopsis gives me weird vibes and I'll go on Goodreads and see people saying it's right-wing propaganda so I'll know to skip that one.

I think I do a pretty good job of deciding based on the summaries if I'm going to like them or not, because I'd say maybe 70% of the ones I read I'd rate a 4 out of 5 and maybe 10% a 5 of 5. The other 20ish% percent would be 3/5 (I've only read one that I'd give a 1/5 and one I'd give a 2/5, and that's less than a percent each out of a few hundred over the years).

Since I've been on a Chinese webnovels binge for a while now and webnovels are usually self published: Yes. Other than those, no.
