just something simple and true like "hey i've been thinking about you and wondering how you've been"

and be okay with the fact that they might not respond at all. they might not be ready to talk about whatever they are going through. opening up conversation with something broad about how they are doing could prompt them to answer however they'd like, if they'd like to. sometimes even when life sucks you don't want to talk about it, but it might be helpful to just have a more chill chat w someone. whatever happens, best wishes to you both <3
