I disagree that the remake tried to play into the shipwar more so than the original. By giving Jessie a much larger role and allowing her to flirt with Cloud more and by developing Aerith and Tifa's friendship way more (not that I don't think they weren't always written as friends, just that the original game didn't spend nearly as much time showing them interact), the remake discouraged the classic Aerith vs. Tifa LTD fans are all too familiar with by now.

That's not to say both girls didn't have romantic moments with Cloud, as per the original game, but the remake pretty clearly leaned into their friendship with each other just as much as it did (if not more) than it did as potential romance with Cloud.
