I don't get it either. It upsets me just hearing about it here, I don't want to think about how would I deal if my friends were obsessed with this.

THANK YOU - I've only seen the Honest Trailer video about it to get the general gist of what it's about and I've been really horrified by it ever since.

All of this. Just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach, I hate it. The idea that people are profiting off of, and enjoying animal abuse is disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel the same way.

I've seen meme's about it (never watched it; not my cup of tea for various reasons) and I can imagine that some people might use them as coping in the "humour to avoid the more negative feelings". Especially since I've seen some disgust from those that also use the memes.

Then there are the others. That, yeah, do seem to be just having fun with it and taking it as a fictional show rather than what it is: a show that features abuse.

It's really about terrible "pet owners" trying to abuse each other.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-05 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I watched the first 5-10 minutes, when it first became a thing - I didn't even get to any thing of substance, I noped out when they were walking out with bear cubs - and I just realised I didn't like the context where these animals were being used as accessories and toys almost - it felt uncomfortable even at that stage. The more I read about it the more I'm glad I didn't go deeper into it- and I'm surprised at some of the people I know who have really gotten into it.

Animal abuse always gets to me more than human abuse (although child abuse comes a close second).

So you haven't seen it and have only the most basic understanding but you still feel like judging your friends? Classy.

Also, it's not really about abusing animals. It's about showing off this wild subculture of people who breed/own/exploit (and therefor, yes, abuse) big cats and all of their drama. Joe Exotic goes to jail mainly because he was convicted of abusing animals (trying to have a human woman murdered being less exciting I guess) and even Doc Antle got investigated for possible animal abuse (again, abusing his human women workers just not as exciting).

It is also just so over the top insane while apparently being real you just can't look away. It's kind of amazing.

You can either ignore it or actually watch it, judging people from the outside kind of just makes you a poor friend.

THIIIIIIIS
I don't judge my friends but everything I have heard about the show makes me want to run away screaming. Preferably to another planet.

I watch a LOT of stuff with awful content so I went into tiger king expecting the animal abuse but i didn't expect it to impact me as much as I did. I watched most of the first episode and then ended up skipping to the last one just to see how it all ended.

I don't think people who enjoy the series are encouraging animal abuse, it was a well edited doc with engaging interviews and music, etc, it was DESIGNED to be consumed by people. But everyone has different buttons. You even say in your secret that you watch stuff with criminals hurting people. It's the same thing.
