This is such a mood. In fanfic I still write what I want and often make small changes or whatever but in general I never understood the attitude of "canon isn't real" because then why the fuck is the entire fandom here in the first place?

I get attached to the characters because of canon so changing that too much is a big no no to me. You can add things and you can interpret things differently but erasing/changing everything about a character on the basis "canon doesn't matter" just doesn't make sense to me. Write about an OC if that's the case.

Alllllll of this.

And I'm going to be a bit mean in general at fandom here: but part of me really strongly suspects that it's almost a way for people to excuse their shitty/OOC characterization that has no basis in source material? 'Oh but canon doesn't matter!' they say as they turn a competent adult into a wibbly child who can't tie their shoelaces without crying or having a panic attack.

Because if you disregard canon entirely, then you can't be wrong!

When for me trying to keep the characters as themselves in fic is part of the fun and the challenge, I'm not into writing the same two characters in every fic I write and just changing the names. That's boring and lazy.

Exactly. The fun of fanfic is putting characters into different situations, not writing those characters completely different. I understand different people will interpret what canon gives them differently so some variation will be there and some situations in fanfic we're given no clues in canon for how they'd react to so that allows for some freedom at times. But none of this excuses being wildly OOC. To me I honestly can't understand why some people are aware they're writing characters wildly OOC but still continue to do it anyway. What's the point of writing about that character if you're not actually writing about them but just something that's supposed to look like them?

Accurately depicting certain characters in non-canon situations can be difficult but sometimes it's just "c'mon, the 'guide lines' for this characters personality are RIGHT THERE!"

There's even wiki articles and meta and official supplementary materials on many characters to help people get an even better grasp on that character. So when a character is wildly OOC I honestly don't think there's any excuse for it. It's not something that takes a lot of skill and practice to avoid just some basic awareness.

But while I rant here about it at the same time I'd never bother anyone directly for writing OOC to their face or anything. I don't want to be mean to them or make them feel bad about their writing. At the end of the day they're probably just having fun. It's just from my perspective I don't even understand the motive for wanting to purposefully do it.

ALL OF THIS THREAD!

THIS. I'm currently writing an AU where I transplanted characters from one canon into the world of another canon, but I've still made sure to give them backgrounds that hit roughly the same beats as their canon ones so they're pretty much the same personality-wise, because that's the fun of the whole thing: how can I put these characters in this other setting and have them still be recognizably those characters?

I'm late to the game obviously, but thiiiiiis.
