Oh, well.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)If I want to go for a dominant/submissive thing then it'll be because of their personalities and inclinations and such and not because some half-assed "iTs tHeIr BioLoGy" stuff. Granted, I have read some ABO that's pretty okay. But it's just not my thing overall and I tend to hate all the worldbuilding people do to explain why otherwise normal humans have the whole ABO thing.

I have read a few A/B/O that i liked, but not many. NONE that had that crazy world-building 'omegas are barely human/no rights' kind of stuff and 'biology rules you!' stuff. Noooo!
The *best*, to me, is this one: it's not only hilarious, but it goes at it from a different angle, and the world-building is fun and charming rather than oppressive and depressing. Scents and Sensibility: The Working Assassin's Guide to Supersoldier Seduction, by galwednesday, silentwalrus, and skellerbvvt
I had to eventually give up and write my own, just to get a fic the way (mostly the way) i really wanted it, heh. But it would be nice to be able to read more that didn't make me want to cringe or just back-button right out.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)I'd also like to add that for me part of what makes a submissive character being dommed so enjoyable is that the sub really wants it, you know? They're very much into it. Sometimes even more so than the dom. It really takes that enjoyment out of they're sort of forced to be one or not really into it at all. Or if it seems like the dom is enjoying themselves more than the sub at the sub's expense or just because their instincts make them or whatever. So I guess that's another reason why a lot of ABO isn't my thing either.

I feel that way, too. Like - oh, you're this way 'cause of your hormones, and even if you hate it, you'll be overwhelmed and i can manipulate you into this mindset....
It's just kinda squicky to me.
Hope you like the fic! I've read it several times - they are awesome authors.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)But ever since I started trying to read a/b/o in other fandoms besides Sherlock, I've lost a lot of the love I had for a/b/o, because yeah, most of the fics are pretty much exactly as you described.

To me, what i wanted in an 'omega' was something like you might get in an actual pack; the omega is like putting off all kinds of 'come get me' pheromones, BUT - it's also a contest for the best of the best.
So the omega can kick ass and take names and send 'lesser' alpha and beta suitors (of both sexes) packing, until the right one comes along that can not only overcome any hangers-on, but that the omega actually clicks with and, while they still fight like hell, this is the one and they'll eventually be all 'okay, you got me'.
That's so much more fun, to me, than helplessness.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)This sort of reminds me of the choosing a mate thing in Blood and Chocolate (the book, not the movie). It's been a long time since I've read it though. But I remember the different members of the pack sort of competed for a mate and even had to prove to that mate themselves they were worthy.
Just...bring back werewolf stuff back y'all.

Hrmmmmmmmmm.... I thought i knew what that was (that book) but I guess not. Or i'm just getting it mixed up with something else, heh.
I like the werewolf stuff, so long as they don't get to crazy with the mate-y/claim-y stuff. I guess i don't like it when characters are sort of slaves to their biology past the point of logic, thinking, choosing....

(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 01:14 am (UTC)(link)This literally sounds just like the first a/b/o fic I ever read (link if you're interested):

The dirty talk when they finally fuck goes a little too dominant!Alpha for my liking, but it's just hot-headed rut-talk. The omega's the one in charge.

Thank you!
You might actually enjoy the thing i wrote. It's deliberately tropey (it's YMMV tropes, of which i'm sloooooowly working on more), but - yeah.
Lots of cussing and fighting and 'fuck off get in me', heh.

(No worries if you don't want to read/hate it. I'm tough.)

(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)The wolf-pack aspect is so not my scene. To me it just feels like an additional layer of social role essentialism. Like, an omega who is capable of rejecting suitors is cool, but I much prefer when they don't have to, because nobody is treating them like a prize to be won in the first place.
Not a big fan of helplessness either though. I prefer when both characters are able to control themselves, if only barely.

I am so very glad that fandom provides (as a rule) for all our different tastes.
I like the idea of omegas being rare and therefore yes, prizes, but nobody owns one or anything. Hormones and instinct might make you fight, but if you ultimately don't click, then it's 'fuck no' and find someone else (or a great, big dildo). And yes - all those hormones making everything feel *really really good*.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 01:43 am (UTC)(link)I guess you could say that I like seeing the alpha/beta/omega stuff as more "personality types" than biological classes that are innate and unchangeable.
no subject
(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I can understand this. Personally, I just don't like it much either way. I prefer when there are no personality types that are particularly associated with the a/b/o types, AND no innate gender behaviors.
I like my a/o roles confined to how things go in the bedroom. Outside the bedroom, who's to say? They're just people.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-10 03:26 am (UTC)(link)But none of those things inherently correlate with personality or D/s roles. Personally, I prefer fics where the Omega is more independent and assertive and prone to physically defending their mate, while the alpha is more easy going and gentle and a bit emotionally needy.
