Definitely. Choosing to define the character as a he/brother is very intentional when we're talking about the Japanese language. I'm not familiar with this manga in particular, but they're definitely intended to be male if that's the original dialogue for sure.

Well, they're intentionally genderless now because the author confirmed it and told the English translators to use they/them and other gender-neutral words. I'm glad she did it (they're human-shaped rocks, why would they have gender), but I know it's a giant retcon and I think she should admit it.
