How long is too long?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I wrote a fic back in 2010, and only posted one chapter. I check on it today and apparently it has reviews?? The latest from 5 years ago...lol Man I forgot about that fic.

Anyway, how long is too long to update a fic? When's the last time you left a fic -- UNread (haha haha -- unwritten, is better, but I couldn't resist making an awful joke)

I almost wanna update. I think I have at least one or two chapters ready. And I did have fun (it was a minor characters focused fic with two OCs)

There is no such thing as too long when it comes to this. Update it!

I've gone a few years without updating. (Yes, I'm *that* fucking author, come at me bro, etc, etc, etc. It's not intentional. There are times you just get creatively constipated and no amount of forcing it helps.)

it's never too late imho! practically speaking, it may be too late to still interest the folks who were on the edge of their seat waiting for an update 10 years ago. but you don't know what new readers would find it if you were to update today.

i've been trying to finish a long fic that i last updated in 2016 (so you beat me on the hiatus front haha) but i keep telling myself that i need to finish the whole entire thing and then update w all remaining 19 chapters at once instead of as i finish it, precisely because of how long it's been. idk if that's rational or necessary. but it's keeping me going lmao.

but honestly if i saw that a fic i enjoyed was updated after a decade i'd be inclined to be v patient w the author and stick it out if the next update took a while too haha.

It's not too late! Someone posted a sequel after nine years in one of my fandoms. And at WIP BB last year someone finished a fic they started in 2003!

On Monday, I was ecstatic to find a new chapter of a fic on ff.net that had last updated in 2008; I left a long paragraph review. Please update your fics if you write more; you will almost certainly make someone’s day.
