Eh, you do you. I thought it had more interesting songs than we've had in most of the 3D Disney movies.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't find it boring, but yeah, the songs felt generic. I wasn't as moved by it as with past Disney movies. But it was fine.

The only song I didn't like was Shiny. I loved all the rest of the songs and the rest of the music as well. Actually, I think it was the second best Disney soundtrack after Lion King. To each their own though.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Shiny gave me flashbacks to watching All Dogs Go To Heaven.

Me too, actually! I still liked it, but it definitely made me think of that Big-Lipped Alligator Moment from All Dogs Go to Heaven.

The song the crab sings? Damn. That's actually my favourite of the bunch. (of course, I am not a fan of Lin Manuel Miranda's singular concept in song writing, and I do love me some Jermaine Clement.

Was it the difference in genre that through you off with that one, or did it just not suit your tastes?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it at first but once it switched into revealing Maui's backstory and insecurities and became much more of a villain-gloat-song, I was delighted.

The sound just didn't suit my personal taste. I don't think it is objectively terrible I just didn't personally like the sound.

I just can’t unhear it ever since someone told me it’s essentially a (weak) David Bowie impression. And although it’s not my favourite song in the film it annoys me how easily it got stuck in my head grr.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel the same. Not my personal favourite, but for me what annoyed me was that it felt so out of step with the rest of the film. I couldn't really enjoy it because it felt like it was spoofing something but I couldn't work out what it was spoofing. David Bowie makes sense.

venusundae: tinkerbell sitting upon some leaves (137 (lots of world out there))

i enjoyed watching it and even teared up at a lot of the more climactic moments (which i honestly do w any movie that has dramatic music + imagery Moments BUT STILL).

however a lot of it just didn't stick w me after i left the theater. and i wonder if that's honestly just because i grew up and didn't need movies like that to stick w me anymore. like it might not be anything w moana as a movie lacking something my childhood favs had. i'm just not a child anymore. and maybe if i'd grown up w this movie it'd be much more enamored with it. but i do have a fun time while watching it, anyhow!

Weirdly it stuck with me actually more than some of the classic ones did. But I related a lot to Moana and I really loved the music and the look. Everything just clicked for me. And the first time I watched it was on an airplane flying home from my sister's wedding.

I felt this way about Frozen where I thought it was kinda boring, but “Let It Go” is still my jam. I definitely enjoyed Moana more than Frozen.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Same!

Moana was visually more interesting to me (and obviously more colorful), with more appealing music all around and the themes made me SO happy, whereas in Frozen, the plot still seems so muddled and half-assed to me and it's been years.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
I never really understood what about Let it Go makes it so immensely popular. None of the songs from Frozen really stuck with me. I'm the embodiment of that "Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong" meme on that subject, except I don't seriously think anyone's wrong to like Frozen just because I didn't care for it.

I like Let It Go when it's sung by anyone else. Idina really struggled on it. It's why Show Yourself and Into The Unknown are so much better for me -She's clearly not in any pain to sing it.

I hated most of the music since I am not a huge fan of Lin Manuel Miranda, and there were far too many similarities in the way he wrote Hamilton in Moana for me to really appreciate those musical moments, but overall I really did enjoy the movie.
It was fairly basic, but at least a half assed attempt at the true magic Disney movies had and we known for, way back before they made 3-D its only go-to artstyle. Like, there were a lot of things that could have been solved in the first five minutes after they finally stopped singing about coconuts, and the final trial was obvious from the start, but overall it was an enjoyable movie to watch I think.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the movie fine, but I don't even remember one single song from it.

i didn't find it boring, i loved it, but i also felt a little disney-troped out. like disney fatigue.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"disney fatigue"

Yeah, I felt a little of that too. Good but I wondered if it was only good because it was just following a formula.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
The film was more or less mediocre for me except for the ending / denouement which I loved for being very humanistic and almost Miyazaki-like.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of my feel good, background-ish movies. I can watch this every other week, really, but part of it is the rather tropey story where everything was very predictable watching it the first time. I just love the setting and the colours, it gives me some warmth and encouragement to not give up when I need it. But I can totally see how it's too boring for others lol

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
I feel similar, in that I think it was very beautiful, very overrated, and very forgettable, especially most of the music. There are many Disney (and similar) movies that I have walked out of already knowing half the words to all the songs, and this was not one of them. You're Welcome is an exception.

[personal profile] morieris 2020-05-16 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly...kind of yeah. I love it but it's not something you really have to be super engaged with like BATB or PATF. It's a livecam of the ocean with some music.
