Yes thank you! I've been wondering the same, especially with this artist. I think its pretty racist to constantly blackwash Asian characters. And sure, there are darker skinned Chinese people but there almost always are certain patterns when it comes to who those fanartists choose to darken and who they don't.

Are they just being drawn by ignorant americans trying to be 'inclusive' by completely misunderstanding that being Chinese is different from being Polynesian and just don't have the braincells to notice it?

I don't go looking for donghua art much (because I watched the drama instead and know those better) but is it really only done with the Nie sect? Because if so...sigh. Nie Mingjue is the tough guy and they decide he's got darker skin? Groundbreaking.

The whole Nie sect is the family with the fatal anger issues. It's pretty telling. Like, they literally tend to die from their anger issues. And it's mostly them, yeah, the only other characters I ocassionally see this done with are Jiang Cheng (anger issues), Wei Wuxian (died from losing control over his powers) and Mo Xuanyu (promiscuous gay dude, goes insane and kills himself). But if a fanartist does do the "blackwashing", it's always the Nie sect first and foremost.

The characters I NEVER see this done with? The Lan sect (gentle and righteous)

I didn't look at a ton of art, but noticed that this artist seemed to be consistently portraying the Qinghe Nie sect as darker and didn't say why. The fact that the Nie clan is arguably the most martial in appearance AND has a tradition of anger issues that end up killing the leader makes me side eye this and wonder if that's related. I just don't see any particular reason to assume they're darker skinned than everyone else.

Yeppp. If it were just an aesthetic choice, wouldn't Jin clan's gold or Jiang clan's purples and blues look better with darker skin?

They seem fair-skinned in the anime adaptation of the novel... So I guess it is indeed that particular fan artist.
