(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 04:57 am (UTC)(link)I really don't know, maybe KE became a so successful as a series partly due to the success of Hannibal and the many other popular murder/detective based series, if only becasue there's obviously an huge audience for it? But other than the immediate circumstance, KE is no more different from The Mentalist that it is Hannibal, imo.
The series is set up more towards Hannibal's tone, sure. via it's not as episodic as past detective dramas, but that's only because they both came out rather recently, and episode-per-episode plots are considered to be out of fashion these days... I mean I can't really imagine why people would think it could be a ripoff or exclusively comparable otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 07:08 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, that's true. I was thinking more in the way that even in Criminal Minds People shipped Hotchner with the dude who killed his family, and how the fans saw things rather than how they were actually depicted. (if I'm not mistaken), but you are right that it does bring up a completely different demographic when the characters are showing interest in each other in the actual show, and moreso that it's borderline reciprocal.
Like it's fairly common for cops/detectives to be Javert (Les Mis) level of obsessive, to the point their whole lives fall apart due to the need to find the criminal who crossed them (which was why I mentioned The Mentalist in my original post) But all of that basically means nothing without the sexual intensity being tangible and reciprocated in the actual media, you're completely right.

For me a big part of it was that it had female leads.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 07:54 am (UTC)(link)Very true, for sure. Though in that specific statement (where I did nothing to make it clear, rather I edited out the actual implication of why I made that point in the first place;;) I was hypothesizing as to why it was so broadly available, since in my country it has the unique intro of a paid streaming service and yet it is still available to watch through certain cable tv channels. I found that strange, but looking it up now, I think that might just be a localized quirk rather than any actual contractual agreement...
The f/f is definitely a plus I must say!
