Yup came here to say people weren’t as dirty as you’d think. Iirc the Anglo Saxon Chronicle even mentions how much the Norse were exceptional bathers/groomers.

Oftentimes this, much like how Jewish people were yet again ostracized during plague times, (they were much less likely to catch the plague due to their bathing patterns as per their beliefs, and thus blamed to be a cause of the plague simply because of they didn't get it as often) is remarked due to the comparison of that an 'average' (generally the most prominent people at the time, the ones who exist into our own fable of history) individual, who would eat their own feces after throwing their chamber pot into the street.
