I'm just watching DS9 for the first time and have been a bit concerned about how much I relate to him at times.

I've just seen the episode where he wants to destroy the founders planet whilst Odo is merging in the Great Link, even though it would kill Odo, Sisko and Bashir. (4x26)

And although I was surprised he was willing to kill them, especially Odo and Bashir because he seems to like them both, I could totally understand his motives in attempting to do it.

Even though fics aren't always the best things to base headcanons on at times, there were a few based on that episode where its suggested that Garak made that choice from his Cardassian ideals - like doing whatever it takes for the good of Cardassia/in General with great sacrifices (alongside the death of Odo and Bashir; also in the fic Garak would have face his execution had he succeeded/as a way to give up his life)

Yup definitively on AO3 and it was tagged as a Garak/Bashir fic (very short - I think it was between 1000-2000 words but I'm not sure). Its been a while since I last read it, but I remember it being about Sisko and Bashir visiting Garak in his cell and discussing it.
