I think this happens to every fandom after the canon has ended, quite often even before the ending, so Sherlock might have actually managed better than many other fandoms.

But this is the exact reason why I always save my favorite fics.

So um... please share your faves? >_>

I just don't agree with the John fanon interpretation. I like him being darker like in the Watch verse.

Haven't read that, but agreed. John in the show is an adrenaline junkie with a bad temper. He's more social than Sherlock, but he's no saint.

I think it's this one -

What's the fanon interpretation? I've read a lot of fic for this fandom and while I suppose there's variability in John's characterization, I think a lot of writers have successfully portrayed him like the other anon said he is in the show.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've read a fuckton of Johnlock fanfic (like...3000+ fics), and I'd say his characterization varies quite a bit.

Myself, I prefer him not to be a total babbling blushing sweetheart, so I tended to read less Toplock, because John was often given that very soft, more submissive characterization in Toplock (though not always). But excluding blushing submissive John, there was still a lot of variety. He ranged from utter BAMF John, to fucked-up ragey John who feels disempowered in his own life and has serious issues with internalized homophobia, to extremely kind, perceptive John who is stoic and kind of a BAMF when needed but totally willing to take a backseat to Sherlock a lot of the time (my personal favorite).

NA - Oh fuck, the Watch verse. What a blast from the past. I loved those fics so damn much. The concept, the characterization, the writing, just nnghhh. So good.

Is that the one where John wakes up in different Aus?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-17 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! Or, well, just different versions of the basic canon universe - not like, coffee shop AU, vampire AU, high school AU.

(Although I think there may have been a third one where one timeline got fractured again, and it may have involved some full on AU universes as well. I don't think I read that one, though, just the first two.

Whenever a pairing in a fandom gets too big, in a fandom that's too big, you get

A) Bad/boring retreads of things everyone's already seen
B) The characters stuck in characterizations that may have been true to canon at one time but no longer are
C) Stories about people who no longer remotely resemble the characters, often in settings that no longer resemble the canon.

Last time I checked about a year ago, there still seemed to be a lot of new fic, but it all looked pretty bad. Disappointing, since there used to be a lot of great Johnlock fic. (There was probably always plenty of bad fic, just lots of good fic to drown that out.) I'm sure a lot of the great writers just moved on to other things now that there hasn't been new canon for a while (things used to get quiet between seasons anyway, once people had mostly exhausted whatever plot-bunnies the latest season had given them).

It's like the fandom collapsed down to a white dwarf made of poorly-written, OOC high school AUs.

Okay, I can totally second this. At first I was like, "What is OP talking about? Sherlock had fucking awesome fanfic." But the new stuff did seem to be getting pretty bland and directionless by the time I left the fandom two years ago, and it's probably only continued in that direction since--for exactly the reasons you listed.

Damn, I really like that art. Thanks for picking it to use for your secret, OP!

Yeah beautiful art

Came to say this too! I've never seen that art and am dying to reblog. Can anyone link?

First of all...totally agree.

Second: Where did you get that pic? And does the artist have any other pictures that gorgeous?
