Seconding this. If anything, I'd say she's incredibly capable and competent in the areas that were open to and expected of a woman of her station. Of all Austen's heroines, she was probably the most visibly admirable to audiences of the time--while still having some significant character flaws she needed to work on.

Agreed. Emma is exactly as accomplished as a young woman of her station ought to be. Arguably, she's got more responsibilities than most wealthy young women because she's also mistress of Hartfield and takes care of her invalid father.

When people talk about a character being a man child, they're referring to someone who is chronologically an adult, but behaves like a child - that slobby frat bro who's never done his own laundry, can't cook, can't handle his adult responsibilities, etc.
