Not that Tennant having a pre-existing fandom has no effect on the popularity of Aziraphale/Crowley, but the two of them have always been the most popular characters in the story. I think in this instance they genuinely are the most interesting, because for thirty years there was nothing stopping people imagining any character in the book as hot and white as they pleased. Based on certain clues in the book, though, people overwhelmingly portrayed Aziraphale as unfashionable, pudgy, and looking a good 20-30 years older than Crowley, and they were still far and away the most popular ship.
