I'm with you in theory, in that whining about the popularity of a juggernaut ship in its own tag is pretty obnoxious, especially when you could just be creating the content you want to see instead.

However, I've seen the "Generic Hot White Boy Ship is only super-amazingly-epically popular because these two Generic Hot White Boy Characters just so happen to be the only interesting characters in the whole entirety of canon" BS way too many times to take you seriously there. Any character can be interesting if you're actually interested in them. Ship what you like, but let's not pretend the blandest characters in the world are suddenly and miraculously the Only Interesting Character In The Whole Entirety Of Canon the instant fandom starts jerking off to their pretty faces.

aren't suddenly^

(i.e., it's amazing how suddenly fascinating and super-interesting even the blandest characters are when fandom deems them hot and shippable.)

Aziraphale and Crowley might be interesting characters, but so could anyone else. But they're hot, white, male, and shippable, and suddenly there are no other interesting characters anywhere else ever.

I mean, a decent amount of people write about Anathema, but the problem is she's either stuck with Newt or you have to delve into AU territory and either fly shipless or come up with a pairing for her, and while I don't mind Anathema/Newt, I'm not in love with the ship either.

I don't know about you, but I genuinely cannot think of other characters that are all that interesting in Good Omens that's also shippable so people can write their romance.

Also they're really not that hot without being the characters they're playing. I'll give you white and male tho.

Also they're really not that hot without being the characters they're playing.

I mean, I'm very much with you there. But the armies of fangirls swooning over and juggernaut-shipping every single character David Tennant has ever played might disagree. ;)

Hey, I don't see anyone going gaga for John Knox in Mary, Queen of Scots

Aziraphale and Crowley are hot?

I mean, I don't go here, but I know what the characters are supposed to look like and...well...I suppose to each their own and I'll leave it at that >.>

Yeah, I can absolutely see the appeal of the ship, but I would never consider them particularly hot. I guess Crowley is a little hot, due to his attitude and how Tennant plays him. But appearance-wise, they're not even real life hot, let alone film-land hot.

As someone not in the fandom and who doesn't care about any ships on this show and who finds it a stretch to call either of them "pretty" or "hot"...they really were the most interesting characters with the best potential for further exploration by fan creators due to the focus on them, as well as their arcs and backstory. Yes, fandoms often latch onto particular pairings because of attraction to the actors playing them (shocking that people might get enjoyment thinking about hot people sexing each other up, I know), but sometimes those pairings really are the most interesting to the fans for other reasons too.

Oh, and the secret doesn't say they're the ONLY interesting characters, as this straw man response implies.

Who would have thought that the MAIN CHARACTERS who have a VERY DEEP AND CLOSE CONNECTION in the story would get a lot of content made for them and be shipped together and have a lot of depth in canon that can be explored and worked with in fan content. Who would have thunk they'd be the most popular ship? This just...it came out of nowhere! It can't be because they're the main characters and have a lot of chemistry...it has to be.......hnnnnnngh cause they're white. And male.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-17 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yep can't possibly be that they have the longest history together. A whole 6000 years that gives fans tons of time periods to play in. That their emotional journey is the core of the story. Nope has to be because white and male. And given that Crowley presents as female twice in the show I'm not even giving them the male part.

Any character can be interesting if you're actually interested in them.

Sure, but if Character A gets five times the amount of screentime as Character B, chances are I'm going to be more interested in Character A just because we get the chance to see more of them.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-17 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
See, generally I would agree with you. I'm so sick of the Generic White Boy Ship Juggernaut, and I'm also getting tired of Crowley and Aziraphale content, but in this case they're definitely not the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-17 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Not that Tennant having a pre-existing fandom has no effect on the popularity of Aziraphale/Crowley, but the two of them have always been the most popular characters in the story. I think in this instance they genuinely are the most interesting, because for thirty years there was nothing stopping people imagining any character in the book as hot and white as they pleased. Based on certain clues in the book, though, people overwhelmingly portrayed Aziraphale as unfashionable, pudgy, and looking a good 20-30 years older than Crowley, and they were still far and away the most popular ship.
