Re: Silly purchaces...

Before the shutdown kicked in, my uncle travelled more than anyone else I’ve ever met. He sent me fancy soap from a French parfumerie after he came back from the south of France after the new year (also flower and veggie seeds and good cheese, which are what I’d asked him for and are more usually my thing than fancy soap.)

I just found their website. www.molinard.com

I want to order more soap because I have been washing my hands like a raccoon lately, and theirs is some of the least drying soap I’ve ever used and it smells awesome. My French absolutely sucks, but it looks like there may be customs forms involved and possibly super heavy shipping charges, since they aren’t (I think? Idk) set up to ship to the US. Anyone know more French than me? (which wouldn’t be hard) They don’t seem to have a US website. I don’t ever wear perfume, and spending actual money on a) soap and b) French soap and c) paying customs charges for soap seems silly, but I like not having to slather on lotion every time I wash my hands; I was going through lotion at a ridiculous rate before switching to the fancy soap.

I may also order native flower seeds, even though I’d have to wait until fall to plant most of them. A lot of people are buying veggie seeds and starting gardens for the first time, but I have enough of a stockpile of seeds of edible plants that I don’t need more. I’ll wait until this winter to restock those.

And I might drop an entire paycheck on soil for the yard; idk if that’s silly or not. The base soil in my yard is clay, and it eats whatever amendments I throw at it. Maybe if I started ordering cubic yards of composted manure I could get through a growing season without the soil reverting to clay before harvest.

Looks like they have an English version of their site, but it wasn't much help on whether or not they ship internationally. Maybe you can shoot them an email and see what they say? I hope you can get your soap!

Have you ever gone to soaptipia.com to buy fancy soap? They're based in Cali and I love the scents and their soaps are so colorful and creative.

SA I typed the site incorrectly!

AYRT—I haven’t; I’m not normally a fancy soap or bodycare products person. I may check them out sometime but a lot of their stuff seems to be sold out. But then, while the fancy French soaps I’m eyeing don’t say they’re sold out, the website has a “force majeure” clause that makes me wonder if there’ll be significant delays due to COVID with whatever I order. Oh well. It’s not like I can’t buy soap, even some nice ones, locally. It’s just rare for me to like a soap (or ant bodycare stuff tbh) enough to order it online. Hell, I’ve washed my hair with dish soap and rinsed with vinegar before.

Those soaps seem delightful and the price is really not bad. I emailed to ask if they ship to the US, so who knows! I might be joining you in ordering fancy French soap. :D

What kind did you get? Were the scents really *perfumy*, or more just - the scent? Like, if you got lemon, did it smell like lemon, or like perfume with a little lemon overlay?

AYRT—The set I got included rose, apricot, and lavender; I think the rose was closest to the real deal, the apricot smelled apricot-ish but not exact, and the lavender was less, idk, sharp? herbal? than the real deal, but then I’m not a big lavender fan. I will still use the soap, because it’s not like a solid perfume bar or anything; a little of the scent lingers after you wash your hands, but that’s all. It doesn’t smell perfumy or fake in the way that, idk, cheap body spray does, and it’s not gonna linger for hours after you’ve left the room. But what I really like is that after a full day of trying to scrub my skin off like Lady Macbeth my hands don’t start cracking and bleeding, even if I don’t wear lotion. I’m not a big lotion fan; I keep some around, but I hate the texture when it first goes on.

I was thinking of buying the 12 bar set and then hopefully I’d have enough soap to last through the pandemic since each bar lasts me 2 months and I hope we have a better handle on covid by 2 years from now. (And that I’m not dead!)

Ah, good. I hate really chemical, 'fake' scents, and i *really* hate it when the scent of something lingers and lingers.

I don't mind lotion, but I usually only put it on at night when i'm going to bed. In the winter (because i have cats and am allergic), washing my hands so much they do that fun crack/bleed thing. Then i slather them with A&D and put gloves on and go to bed, heh.

Don't be dead!

For whatever reason this year the ants have decided that my yard is their utopia. I usually try to leave non-harmful bugs alone as long as they're outside, but it's actually getting ridiculous.

Ugh, fuck ants. I know not every species of ant is a plague on gardens, but so many are. I’m sorry.
