For me, it's best when it at least feels like it's in character, but it almost always ends up feeling generic and therefore not like the characters at all.

Yes, exactly! To be good IMO it should feel, like, torn from inside the characters like the character had no choice other than to say it

I agree. In-character dialogue is hot. Out-of character dialogue is not. Then again, I avoid out-of-character anything. In-character is extremely important to me and probably more important to me than my actual kinks showing up in fics.
