High level - science fiction, fantasy, and crime/mystery/thriller. Those are the big 3, those are the things that I seek out and return to, I think they're the most interesting and best.

Within those three categories - for science fiction, I tend to like either very swashbuckling adventure space opera, or very soft-sf weird literary stuff. I also like science fantasy a lot. I'm not really interested in hard SF or military science fiction - it's not actually the scientific or technological or speculative edge of science fiction that's interesting to me It's really the ideas and the atmosphere.

For fantasy, I really like contemporary and historical fantasy, and then after that, soft-edged adventure fantasy and dreamy romantic fantasy. I usually don't read epic fantasy at all anymore. I just don't find it that interesting. I really like magic systems that are based on real-world occultism, and I like thinks that are interesting from a literary point of view - I don't care about realism or rigor in worldbuilding, I want to see interesting color.

For crime and thrillers, I either go really hard-edged or really cozy. So I love crime writers and mystery writes like James Crumley or espionage writers like Len Deighton or John LeCarre, and I like Golden Age writers like Dorothy Sayers a lot, but nothing in between.

Space opera and science fantasy are my scifi preferences too. I'm more into space as a setting for a story (and seeing alien cultures) and not particularly interested in technology, military, and science specifics.

Hard same. I think ultimately trying to be too science-y about it just hurts the immersion too. It may be science fiction but the fiction part of the equation is what needs to be focused on.

Agreed. My dad loves scifi too, but he's more into the hard scifi stuff. He's much more of a technical brain though (majored in math and history). I'm much more interested in cultures and characters and how a scifi setting affects people. The setting is just a tool for me. I also love a scifi/fantasy crossover.
