True. And a more casual cop show or one with some humor elements could make it work. I think Psych could have made a musical episode work. I was thinking of the more serious ones mostly. Musical episodes don't mix well with shows that don't normally have a lot of humor and do have a lot of violence and serious plotlines.

Psych did a musical! They ended up airing it as a special, not a regular ep, but still

With your mention of a cop show there has been instances of this happening naturally, like in in NCIS where Ziva randomly sung that one song as part of her plot line. Not a musical episode mind you, but music exists within the military and the police force as a standard. Like not all musicals are all in your face and jumping for joy. Much like the eulogy BoJack Horseman made for his mother, which lasted the whole episode, musicals can be made to the effect of basically anything so long as you put your mind to make it that way.
So while a serious cop show wouldn't have a Bring it On theme to complement its tone, it could make some serious soliloquies in dedication to a fallen member of the team, via Les Mis, or Great Comet.
