In the manga, the characters learn how to hunt their own food. There’s a whole thing about how everything needs to eat something, and you need to show respect for your prey.

Yeah. I never got the "meat bad!" angle just the "wow wouldn't it be fucked up if kids were raised for their brain meat? ha ha you're right it WOULD be fucked up here's an entire story about it!"
