Re: Question for Americans

Also not American, and yes, I totally agree.

Another thing I was shocked to learn is that many US universities force their students to live on campus for their first year, and sometimes for their second year as well. So like, even if their family home is close by and they could continue living there for free while attending school, they are forced to spend thousands and thousands of dollars more to pay for on-campus housing. That is so fucked up I can't even fathom it. Like, yeah, a lot of people want to live on campus and that's cool. But the idea that they're forced to is just rage-inducing to me.

When I was in college (years ago) not only did freshman HAVE to stay in the dorms, but purchasing a meal plan was also mandatory. IIRC, it was 20 meals a week, because the dining hall was closed for Sunday dinner. You didn't get your money back if you failed to use those meals (they expired every week) and you couldn't officially transfer them, either. (Though people used to "swipe in" their friends using their meal card and most monitors let you.)

AYRT - It honestly makes me sick to hear about stuff like this. I mean, it's not surprising, but that doesn't make it any less contemptible. :(

It would have a major effect on the city's housing market to have 10,000 or more people searching for place to live all at once. And some of us want our freedom so bad we don't care about the price tag.

Re: Question for Americans

Wow. Congrats on missing the point.

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
How the fuck did I miss the point? I was explaining why student housing exists.

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT and yes, you really did spectacularly miss the point.

Just because some people would prefer to spend the extra ten thousand dollars a year or so to live on campus, and can afford to do so, doesn't mean that's true of everyone, and by forcing them to live on campus these post-sec institutions are forcing said students to go tens of thousands of dollars deeper into unnecessary debt.

Did you actually read the comment you replied to? Because it seems like you didn't. If you had you'd know that my objection was not to students having the option to live on campus. My objection is to the fact that first year and often second year students are not given the option NOT to. I'm not even sure how I could possibly need to explain to you why that's a bad thing. Like, how could you be so blind as to not grasp the sheer injustice of saying, "Sorry poor kids; we know you could live with your parents for free but well, post-secondary is a business in this country, and allowing you to do so would greatly cut into our profit margins, so we're going to gouge the shit out of you for on-campus residency instead."

The parasitic toxicity of it is honestly stunning.

Yes, I DID read the comment I replied to, and I understood it perfectly. Fuck you for accusing me of not reading it. I never said I didn't understand your objection, and I never said I thought it wasn't messed up. You are putting words in my mouth.

I was poor and went into 30,000 of debt and lived in dorms. I don't like being judged for it, particularly since the semester I lived off campus I had to overdraw my bank account living in hotels after my housemate got evicted.

I mean. if you understood ayrt's comment, why did you respond so nonsensically to it? you understood their objection, you think the way things are is messed up...why was your response to raise a bunch of objections that don't even pertain to what was said? you seem to be projecting hard here anon.

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My response was not nonsensical, and it absolutely did pertain to what OP said. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Go to hell you fucking bastard.

Wow. Congrats on being an asshole.

Since you also apparently missed the point:

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Just because someone didn't reply to your comment agreeing with it does not mean they missed the point. Also, it is possible to go to college without being "forced" to pay for the college's hpusing.

I hope someday someone accuses you of missing the point when you in fact did nothing of the sort. Then you'll realize how rude it is.

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's super common, at least among non-elite schools. State schools probably don't do that and my private undergrad university didn't.

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's far from all schools that enforce it, but it's not that uncommon. Major schools like MIT and Columbia force their freshmen to live on campus; it's not like it's just little niche arts colleges that do it or something.

Upsettingly, a few state schools enforce it as well. It should be (is) unconstitutional for them to do so, and yet there must be a loophole of some kind because they do it anyway.

That is insane. :/

Re: Question for Americans

(Anonymous) 2020-05-24 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it affects poor students' choices. I didn't get good enough grades to get any scholarships and I didn't want to burden my parents with debt so I knew I couldn't apply to any colleges that required on campus housing.

I'm sorry, anon, that just bites. I hope things went alright for you in the end, regardless.
