I think he did it on purpose and then realized after people reacted that it made him look like an incredibly awful piece of shit.

It's funny how no one that I saw (at least on my timelines) was really on Gaiman's side despite the fact that the other party involved was Amanda Palmer. Extraordinarily difficult accomplishment. Not that people agreed with her either

I'm strictly on the side of schadenfreude in this dispute.

Yeah, I feel kind of bad for both of them despite really disliking Palmer until I saw this, and then I really disliked and really felt sorry for both of them. Palmer has seemed like an obvious trainwreck for years, well before she took up with Gaiman, but pointing out that your ex is a trainwreck to your squintillion social media followers is a dick move. Also, I’m really boggled that he either took up with her despite knowing she was a trainwreck, or somehow missed the blazing neon “this person is fucked up and will do stuff for attention that even you would think goes too far” signs. I really hope for her sake that that wasn’t what he found attractive about her, because if it was it probably made her worse.

he has basically said that's what he found attractive about her. i think the quote was "life would never be boring." and quite predictably, this friction seems to have been caused by palmer being less alternative, i.e. she wanted to close the relationship now that they have a kid.
