Re: Non-fandom confessions

I'm still a Christian. I struggle with admitting it in public because of how unpopular it is for perfectly understandable reasons and how awful so many of us are. I've struggled over the years because of those people and because the versions of the faith I heard as a child don't fit with science or the progressive, rights affirming, people loving worldview that always felt right to me. But I finally found a version of faith that felt right to me and confirms my view of the world.

You're not alone nonny. I have very similar feelings on my faith. Nobody in my life knows.

That's okay, nonnie. It took me years to admit (out loud, to other people) that I'm Catholic (for obvious reasons, I'm sure you can imagine, there's a fairly lengthy list). If you found the way of practicing your faith that best suits you, then (I should hope) these people who are the way you described them, will also be open to you, especially if they know you, and they know what other views you hold (I, for one, do not agree with all of the Church's teachings, and when I meet/hear of the way some people practice their faith, I'm...suddenly more understanding as to why others shun it). Faith will always be a very personal thing, and aligning oneself with a group of label is very hard; your friends and other important people should (in my opinion) be respectful of your views and choices -- they don't have to agree with you, they don't have do what you do, but you both afford each other that same modicum of respect and space. Many of my friends are not spiritual or believers in anything, but they have always been understanding and they KNOW me. They know my positions on certain things and know that I am open to them as well. I suppose I'd say to have a little faith in your friends. I'm sure as long as you're not smashing them over the had with a bible, or dragging them to church or a prayer circle...
