I didn't find the romance between Claire and Jamie all that interesting myself. I kept watching for the adventure aspect of the show, and mostly eyerolled through all the sex scenes.

That said, I never, ever once got the impression the story was meant to be a love triangle. It's the Claire and Jamie story. Frank isn't in the running, and he was never meant to me. So like, I get criticizing it for being a boring romance between Claire and Jamie, but I disagree with criticizing it for half-assing the love triangle, because I don't think it was every trying to be a love triangle.

Except, as I recall, one of the significant plots of the entire first season was Frank trying to find her and Claire trying to get back to him. That's a pretty undeniable branch/leg of a love triangle there. I also feel like it was pretty clearly marketed as one in promo material, too.

I don't know about the promo material.

Claire was absolutely trying to get home. Because it was home, and comparatively safe. And yes, because her husband was there. Like, obviously someone in her situation is going to default to "Holy shit, this is bad, I need to get home."

But the narrative never left any room for doubt that the romance of the story was Claire/Jamie. You didn't have to read between the lines on that. It was telegraphed from very early on. Frank was not in the competition. If Jamie did have any competition, the thing he was competing with was the 20th century itself, and that competition ended by the end of S1, which was still early days in the series.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

Yeah, that's how I felt about it. Sucks to be Frank, but he never really felt like he was in the running, even if he married Claire first. You (the reader) just don't "see" him enough as a character for him to feel like a true contender relative to Jamie. Downside of most/all the book taking place apart from him, and while Claire is trying to get back to the stones the whole time, she doesn't think on him enough that he feels like a character still (or in TV terms, not enough flashbacks of her with him to make the case for their couplehood).
