If Hetalia ever touches on more recent wars- Vietnam, Korean, or even the current war in Iraq, people would feel a lot differently. "lightly poking fun at" WWII (in whatever form) is metonymy for everything: the Holocaust, Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, America's atomic bombs, both theaters of war.. the list goes on and on, not to mention the suffering this anonymous mentioned.

As anonymous is saying, people will always make crass jokes. But telling people hurt by all these things to 'lighten up'? So, so wrong.

People have been making fun of those wars since they happened and still are today. ("This Land" from the 2004 election, for example, as a way of making fun of Vietnam.)

Yeah, I understand that happens. I think what the original OP for the secret is talking about Hetalia. Remember.

So? OP for the secret is saying that those of us with humor inclining that way are shameful, are personally offensive to her for liking it.

I think we have a right to say "lighten up." Especially when all the concepts in the secret aren't new.

Country slash has been around for hundreds of years. Hetalia isn't the first. And frankly, I like it despite it making a mockery of every International Relations theory I have ever learned.

Everyone crying "oh so offensive!" should stop and think. If they don't want us to tell them to lighten up, maybe they should keep their opinions to themselves. Tit for tat and all that.

You can assume OP means for a broader disgust with war humor, but sticking with what the secret itself actually says, s/he is appalled by the fact of its popularity despite the fact it contains making fun of WWII specifically and the fact that Hetalia made countries gay. All I agree with is how it's morbid to be making fun of WWII veiled in the cutesy form of manga characters.

I haven't even said anything about Hetalia's slashiness. Don't bring that up as another counter-argument for something I haven't even mentioned to make it seem like I'm ripping the whole fandom apart.

Where do you get off saying people aren't allowed to say they find things offensive just because you don't? If you want to retaliate with just "lighten up," that's your prerogative as well. So you better start commenting, because a lot of people agreed with original OP. \:

Yeah, they never make fun of the Korean war! And they certainly didn't make an award winning TV series doing so, still on syndication twenty-five years after the final episode, with the finale as the most-watch television episode of anything, ever.

Out of curiosity, what show was this? I don't watch much television.

M*A*S*H. But it was really supposed to take place during the Vietnam war, they just made the setting Korean because 'Nam was a more sensitive topic back then. Derp.

Technically it hasn't ended. This is because every war Korea has is so awesome it has to be long to contain all the awesomeness.
