How fucking dare any of you tell someone to 'lighten up'?

WWII didn't happen in a vacuum. The consequences are still being felt today... families torn apart, histories covered up, horrendous pain.

And you have the gall to tell sufferers of that pain to 'lighten up'?

Hetalia is offensive because it pays no heed whatsoever to the human cost, the human pain and suffering. Instead it reinforces cutesy stereotypes of countries that are grossly inaccurate and lead you to laugh at something that has little to do with the true circumstances at all.

Don't you dare tell anyone not to feel legitimate pain again.

Oh wow. Actually, yes I was. My family was in the camps, my family ended up in shitty refugee camps in the countries they escaped to, I have no extended family after they were scattered over the world. Members of my family went insane, not only the ones who fought on opposings sides of the war, warfare in the aftermath of WWII also involved and afected my family, so... yes. WWII happened to me. I wasn't there, but the effects linger for generations.

Maybe you could learn to respect those who still have sticks up their arse and aren't lucky enough to be able to laugh at these things.

THIS. :|

If Hetalia ever touches on more recent wars- Vietnam, Korean, or even the current war in Iraq, people would feel a lot differently. "lightly poking fun at" WWII (in whatever form) is metonymy for everything: the Holocaust, Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, America's atomic bombs, both theaters of war.. the list goes on and on, not to mention the suffering this anonymous mentioned.

Bull.

People have been making fun of those wars since they happened and still are today. ("This Land" from the 2004 election, for example, as a way of making fun of Vietnam.)

Yeah, they never make fun of the Korean war! And they certainly didn't make an award winning TV series doing so, still on syndication twenty-five years after the final episode, with the finale as the most-watch television episode of anything, ever.

Nope.

This is why Germany still has an issue with national pride and birth rates. It was totally controversial when a politician said "I'm proud to be German" a couple years back. Yes, it's perfectly okay to acknowledge that something happened, and that yes, it was terrible, but there comes a point where you have to realize that it is the past and it's okay to make light of it sometimes, or at least not feel incredible guilt over it. We can't dwell on the past forever. Acknowledge it, know the consequences, but don't get hung up on it; it's okay to make fun of blunders and silly factoids. People have, are, and will continue to make light of historical events. If you don't like it, ignore it. Simple as that.

(Anonymous) 2008-11-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, we need to move on. Moving on is good and healthy. I don't care that people make light of historical events.

The problem I have is people telling someone feeling pain to 'lighten up'. That is so offensive it's not funny. I'm not calling for Hetalia to be banned, I don't care if you make war jokes. I care if you tell me I have a problem because I feel pain about the events you're making light of.

Re: 139

The OPsecret wasn't just saying that they found it offensive, they were saying that they were ashamed of the people who liked it. Of course people are going to respond to a personal attack like that by telling the OP to not take things so seriously.

Re: 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think some people are saying to lighten up not because feeling pain about the consequences is stupid, but because it seems as though reading Hetalia and laughing at it makes it the most horrible thing ever. Hetalia barely even touches those subjects because the author knows how horrible it was. And it's not as though it's the only thing that has people learn about history, but it teaches it in a light-hearted manner.

Those people are telling the OP to lighten up about Hetalia, not WII. They are basically saying the series is not that serious and its treatment of the subject matter is hardly offensive - not that WII is not serious and shouldn't be taken as such.

This was never about anyone's personal tragedy until you pulled the issue into the fray, so thanks a lot.

I, for one, was not telling people to 'lighten up' about WW2. I was telling people to 'lighten up' about Hetalia. It's a comic, not a dissertation. Do people get this upset over other comics, tv shows, or books that talk about WW2 in a humorous way?

Yes, what happened during WW2 is horrible. Nobody is denying that. But it's a little silly to get so upset over a comic.

I'm sorry that you were hurt by war. Believe me, I know how that feels.

I don't know anything about Hetalia but I get what you're saying. I wouldn't tell someone to 'lighten up' if they didn't like something. Correcting misconceptions is different but telling someone they need to get a sense of humour is insensitive.

Re: 139

[identity profile] anthraxpretzels.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I see your overall point.

Question: What do you see Hetalia doing to rightfully portray such events? Seriously, would them portraying it as a bloody chibi slaughter really make up for it? :\

Currently it glosses over most of WWII/the Holocaust. (The Rape of Nanking, though, I found a tad offensive, since my grandparents had to live through it)

Presentation of rant could've been better.

Re: 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
If one holds everything you just said to be universal, no history jokes can ever be made, isn't that so? All of history is gory and miserable; at NO point has the world been entirely at peace. With or without people, violence still carries on.

To get so very upset either way about an amusing comic drawn by one person is ridiculous. Furthermore, the pieces in question don't depict what occured as right or wrong, either way; instead, they deal with covering the alliances between each nation at that time. At no point does "Germany" break off into a tirade about Jews, and "Japan" does not express his hatred of the Chinese. Without covering the moral implications, it simply discusses international relations in a humourous way. The author never says that he thinks the Holocaust or the Rape of Nanking were funny.

Getting so angry and hurt about these things is simply silly. If I pull old politcal cartoons from a textbook making fun of the Red Scare, will angry Russian-Americans come out to bash me? What about the Dr. Seuss cartoons that deal with racism?

The point of things like these is not to say that what happened didn't matter, or that you should forget it, or anything of the sort. But to continue harboring such hatred and anger makes no sense; these enemies are long gone, and especially in these times, it's good to have something to soothe such hurts. Even if they still make you offended, you don't have to look at them.

I'll be honest, also deciding to hate a favorite hobby because of ONE work within the genre you like is, frankly, stupid. I'm not going to stop enjoying fantasy novels because I find Anne Rice's works distasteful, or because I thing Eragon is cliche. I'm also not going to force people to agree with me. I simply ask that when sharing opinions, people be civil. I believe anyone can think whatever they like, so long as they don't get in my face about it. After all, a person's rights are unlimited until they begin to infringe on another person's rights, and I have a right not to be yelled at, just as everyone else does.

... [/tl;dr] I apologize. In short, please, calm down. To say either way that this cartoon is "wrong" or "right" is silly, because honestly, does anyone including the fans seriously base important viewpoints off of it? I don't think anyone reading it is suddenly going to think war is amusing just because of a silly stereotypical cartoon.

I agree that fandom in general and [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets in particular is shitty at responding to people who have been hurt by their favorite series/book/show/whatever. Too often, any criticism of someone's favorite canon or fandom is met with BAWWW YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR FEMINISTS SUCK GOD BLACK PEOPLE ARE SO TOUCHY.

But in this case?

You didn't make a secret talking about your personal hurt from Hetalia, and why you personally were disgusted by it. You made a secret about how everyone in its fandom was making you ashamed to be a fangirl, how it was pathetic trash, with no qualifiers about how this was a personal reaction due to your own history with and feelings about World War II.

Seriously, guys--and I'm not just talking to you here, OP, but to everyone who posts poorly-worded, inflammatory secrets and then gets all angry when people react badly to them--it's got to take at least five minutes to put together and submit a secret. More if you take time to make it look nice. Somewhere in there, take a moment to think about the way you're wording it. If you don't, and you wind up posting a secret saying I LOSE ALL RESPECT FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES _____ or _____ MAKES ME ASHAMED TO BE A FANGIRL BECAUSE IT'S PATHETIC TRASH, then really I have trouble feeling sorry for you when people chew you out for it.

Nobody's telling anybody to "lighten up" about the war.

People are telling the OP and the people who are making stupid arguments (no Japanese person is allowed to approach that war lightheartedly because the Japanese government hasn't repented for it and all of Japan is a blob of same-thinking Borg!) to lighten up over the existance of a comic that isn't meant to take any part of history seriously. Being ashamed of the existance of a crack series because you were expecting it to be deep and dark and sensitive and not make any jokes ever about some heavier issues = needs to lighten up.

I, for one, thinks the girl who argued in the OP's favor by saying she feels no sympathy for Japanese people when it comes to the atomic bombs because it ended the war faster and they deserved it, needs to sit the fuck down and shut up. Somehow, I feel like the people supporting the OP (not you necessarily) are falling way more into the inaccurate stereotype trap in a BAD way by viewing all Japanese people as the same horrible, unapologetic person. But that's just me.

Once again: the war was fucking horrific, and human suffering is not to be trivialized. However, being able to laugh at something does not necessarily equal trivialising it. People who get worked up over the existance of a lighthearted manga need to lighten up and calm down for their own sakes, because they're seriously only ruining their own day like that.
