I, for one, was not telling people to 'lighten up' about WW2. I was telling people to 'lighten up' about Hetalia. It's a comic, not a dissertation. Do people get this upset over other comics, tv shows, or books that talk about WW2 in a humorous way?

Yes, what happened during WW2 is horrible. Nobody is denying that. But it's a little silly to get so upset over a comic.

Seriously, have you seen some of the wanks people start over perceived sexist, racist, classist issues in other forms of pop entertainment? ;)

I like Hetalia, but I don't think we fans need to be defending it so vehemently so as to erase any trace of offensiveness from the source altogether. I mean, there are some problematic panels in the thing, ngl. I think the Hetalia fans might have let the OTT tone in the original secret dictate the level of their own responses, which makes some of them come across as a bit rabid and dismissive? Hence this commenter's response, I guess. Nothing can be ideologically pure, but you know what, we can like it anyway. And still observe some of the politically unsettling undercurrents in the original comic and the fandom, despite it not being srs bzns.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying here, so, at the risk of pointing out something you already know, the fact that it was a comic wasn't the issue -- Sunni Islam seriously discourages visual depictions of the Prophet and its other principle figures (this isn't in the Quran, but it's mentioned in one or two of the Hadith, I think) at all, in any context. It was a religious issue, not an issue with the way he was depicted.
