My big nope was that Liv Tyler (who was still a teenager at the time pretty sure) was cast as a "hot girl" and shown pole dancing and stripping in the music video for her father's band.

It's a bit like hearing Donald talk about Ivanka.

I AM UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THIS.

Ikr, it always creeped me out.

Yeah, that part hasn't aged too well.

(Though to be fair, maybe it was always creepy; I was younger than them when I first saw the video so I never thought of that part of it.)

I always thought it was...weird. (I'm about 6 months older than Liv Tyler.)

Like, I assume it was just regular nepotism (Steven pulling strings to get his kid a job) or stunt casting by the director ('let's cast the kid of one of the band members!') and nobody thought about the implications of casting her in THIS video in particular, but still.

DA - After reading about Steve Tyler's personal life, I'm less certain that it was just nepotism. In his late twenties, Steve Tyler convinced the mother of his 16-year-old groupie/girlfriend Julia Holcomb to sign over legal guardianship of her to him.

Mila Kunis was 17 when she was in the Jaded music video, and Alicia Silverstone was 16 when she was in the Cryin' music video.

Like. I'm not trying to over-simplify this. Finding a 16-year-old hot is not remotely a crime. Putting them in sexy music videos is not a crime.

But I feel like Tyler's relationship with Julia Holcomb was pretty damn yikes. And when you put it together with his ongoing tendency to sexualize teenage girls in his music videos, it only deepens the yikes, IMO.

Sadly, that kind of creepiness was rampant back in the day. It was just a different time (note: I do not think it makes it okay). Even today, I get grossed out when a male rocker/celeb gets older but his barely legal girlfriends never do.

The part that makes it ping as extra creepy to me is the whole legal guardianship thing. Like, I don't think it's okay for grown adults to sleep with 16-year-old groupies, but I'm also aware that back in the day it was very normalized. But "Come live with me out of state, where I'm your only connection and I have legal control over you," really adds an additional level to it, IMO. Maybe in his mind he was just taking care of her - it does sound like her home-life was pretty messed up. But regardless of what his intentions were and weren't, I actually find it a lot creepier than no-strings-attached sex with a groupie.

Oh no, I agree, especially if he was sleeping with her. Ted Nugent pulled that shit too with a 17-year-old, if I recall (though not to save her from a bad situation). It creates some pretty messed up dynamics, because now that person is technically their child in addition to being a lover. Icky.
