I haven't gotten round to reading the Silmarillion, but since I've been struggling my way through the first two Lord of the Rings books I'm not sure if its something I want to read either (I like the story of LOTR, I'm just struggling with the way its written).

This annoys the hell out of me, too. But what's even more grating is that most people don't even notice, or they don't care. It's not considered lazy writing or poorly done characterization because it's so common.

I get where you're coming from, but there are exceptions - unfortunately, the exceptions are usually cheese action movies they're trying to make appealing to overseas markets, which I love but I understand aren't most peoples' preference. Not everyone wants to watch xXx 3 Return of Xander Cage. I think it fucking rules, personally, but that's not universal.

It's so frustrating to see blatantly modern ideas/concepts/vocabulary in "period settings". Especially if it's an adaptation of a work that was WRITTEN DURING THE TIME IT'S SET like the dialogue and everything is already there to work with.
