(Anonymous) 2020-05-27 07:15 am (UTC)(link)Take Shakespeare. In "faithful" adaptations I understand only a fraction of what's going on, because both language and customs are too foreign for me. That doesn't mean I can't enjoy it, but I miss a good portion of what's going on, from throw-away puns to basic character motivations, and I'm constantly aware of it. That does not make me want to engage with Shakespeare's work, no matter how great a bard he was.
