Inspired by #7

What's your least favorite example of "character has a sudden case of plot-relevant stupidity"?

Jake and Amy not talking about having kids before they got married actually kind of ruined Brooklyn Nine-Nine for me. No fucking way Amy Santiago wouldn't have had, like, binders of info about future children and career coordination lined up.

Oh, absolutely!

ABSOLUTELY!

Yes! That was what made me finally stop watching (although being pissed at Mike Schur because of the Good Place ending probably played at least a tiny part too lol).

"Dany kind of forgot about Euron's ships" but really, mentioning anything from Season 8 might be pushing it.

everyone was so collectively stupid that I've made up in my mind that that was an effect of magic returning.

Already in the other thread, but Bones on just about anything to do with religion.

I mean, it's possible that she was just constantly an asshole, but it wasn't shown that way.

Re: Inspired by #7

True. But Booth balanced it out pretty well by being that way about so many things. The plot usually sided with Booth and Bones' negativity on religion was clearly portrayed as bad whereas Booth's negativity on any perspective that wasn't his was seen as good.

IDK, I thought she was super unlikeable. Even though I usually agreed with her position when she was arguing with Booth on various issues, something about her character just really rubbed me the wrong way.

Everyone in Buffy in season 7 suddenly having no idea how to cope with an imminent apocalypse despite having dealt with them frequently. I know they had to make it seem bigger than the other big ones because it was the big finish but it was just bad.

hm, MMV. I didn't see it as a case of the stupids, I saw it as "I'm fucking overwhelmed and very very tired and at the end of my strength."

To begin with, Buffy was battered from her resurrection; then she suddenly finds out that she's the one that's responsible for the First Evil being able to attack all the slayers-in-training; on top of which, the First has the army of Turok-Hans (or w/e they're called.)

I thought the threat in Season 7 felt genuinely overwhelming, especially compared to Adam and Glory.

ayrt

To me it felt like the characters stopped developing and just dug further into their worst traits. Buffy was mostly fine unless they needed her to make a mistake so they could justify having everyone turn on her.

but like...
Giles in every other season: You need to make the tough decisions and be willing to sacrifice and take responsibility
Buffy in s7: okay I'm doing that now
Giles: why are you doing this to me?

DA

Giles' characterization from partway through season 6-on was just generally awful. Personally I don't think that extended to anyone else, I just don't think they knew what to do with Giles once Buffy was all grown up and didn't need him for that special season 5 training anymore.

They didn't know what to do with Willow if she didn't have a love interest either.

I thought it was Willow? She and Giles went to see that stupid big eye thing, and it told them that Willow bringing Buffy back was why the First was there....

AYRT

Was it that, or was it that she'd died and come back in S1 yet continued to be the Slayer, even though the succession had passed to Kendra and then Faith, thus having two Slayers at once and mucking up the system?

Ah, nope, it was Willow. "Buffy's second resurrection caused an irregularity in the Slayer line. The First tried to use this glitch to eliminate the Slayers forever and gain corporeal form."

I think one of the more annoying parts of first and second season ST:TNG was how Wesley Crusher the provisional ensign would out-engineer La Forge who actually graduated from the Academy.

thank you! I never liked Wesley, he was way too much of a Marty Stu

Re: Inspired by #7

While I've totally mellowed on Wesley over the years, as a kid I didn't so much identify with or idolize him as think it was weird how he was always best at everything.

Any time that Caitlin Todd in NCIS could have displayed some of those vaunted profiling skills, she instead stuck her head all the way up her backside and Fucked! It! Up!
Oh no, this guy can't have killed himself because his mum said so! (maybe, but he was a murderer...)
Oh no, this poor amnesiac woman is just a VictimTM! (Whoops, she's actually a cold-blooded murderer...)
Oh no, I can't stab this terrorist, he has Kind Eyes! (He shot one of your co-workers not ten minutes ago, but okay...)

It really just felt like the writers were making "Being Sympathetic" more important to her character than "Being Competent".

In "Minority Report", when the protagonist has his future murder prediction come up, why doesn't he just... fuck off out of town for a few days? Like, it's not just 'You're gonna kill someone', it's 'You're gonna kill THIS person in THIS place at THIS time' - he could have just... avoided that place? And not gotten himself into such an obvious setup?
Obviously it would have been a rather less interesting movie that way, but still.

Every time they had Bela Talbot show up on Supernatural, the boys basically lost all sense and ability to do anything.

She wasn't the only one, but she was one of the worst.
