For a while I was getting really stupid extortion emails using a password that only existed on LJ. The fact that LJ has, to my knowledge, not issued an alert or admitted that a file with their passwords is out there on the internet makes them extremely sketchy in my book. And I like that the DW team is being really proactive about this.

Yeah, it's def sketch. Unsurprising given the transformation the whole site took for the worse in an effort to, successfully, stamp out anti-Kremlin bloggers and protesters on the platform.

Reply All had a pretty neat episode about it you want to listen to or read the transcript.

edit: I should add that it's been a long time since I bothered to check lj, but it left me with the impression that the owners had little interest in retaining a userbase.

Same, and that password was about five harddrives and six operating systems ago, so I'm pretty sure that you don't have root.
