Oh. I had no idea his accent was terrible.

It's really, really bad. Which is a shame, because it's otherwise a charming performance (and apparently when Dick Van Dyke belatedly realised how bad it was, he was really embarrassed and asked why no-one had told him during filming).

Bless him. It was awful but it's a credit to him as an actor that his performance was no less charming for it. :)

I love Bert, too, bad accent and all!

Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-27 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Bert, but I'm really glad they didn't have Dick Van Dyke do an accent for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I'm pretty sure he was banned from further accentery by Parliament.

LOL!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure it's bad, but it's just so dang charming that I cannot manage to care at all!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Same! This is a cute secret. :)

(Anonymous) 2020-05-28 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. Bert is so lovely I even love his accent.

Lol when I was a kid I thought he was a real cockney, and my Dad (a Londoner) looked ready to disown me.

As bad as his accent was, he's a really lovely character :'D

Oh, I loved Bert! I didn't even realise the accent was inaccurate when I was little (what with being a small-town American kid, and all). I just really thought Burt was a fun guy that I'd love to hang out with.

I've since gone on to do some occasional voice stuff in the last few years, some while incorporating a more realistic British-inspired accent, but I still find his awful cockney oddly charming.

...And I've come to the realisation that baby-me totally shipped Mary/Bert. So... there's that. XD
