I feel like anyone who stans Amy Pond or River Song is probably obnoxious as a personality quality, especially if they claim the characters are -basically- them.

I like Amy and River, but I have to ignore all the bits from canon that I don't like to enjoy their characters.

...So you don't actually like them then.

Idk, I get what ayrt means I think, especially for characters in a tv show. There are characters from tv that I definitely don't enjoy all the canon characterizations of, while still overall liking the character. I can see why that might not count as liking them, but for something like Doctor Who, there's episodes that have takes on the characters that are way more interesting to me than others, and I do end up ignoring their characterization in episodes that weren't as interesting to me.

First off, I'm never sure what "stanning" means. Second, I don't think Amy does anything any worse than Rose (who treats her family and Mickey terribly), but she still ultimately does good and makes the right choices. And River is supposed to be an antiheroic character.

NA

Stan originally comes from the Eminem song about an obsessive fan, Stan, who writes to the singer and gets angry when he doesn't hear back and kills his pregnant girlfriend and himself by driving a car with her in the trunk off a bridge. So a stan is an overly-obsessive fan and stanning is obsessive fanning. Sometimes people just use it to mean serious fan, and sometimes it is used in a sort of self-aware, deprecating way, but it is often used derisively.

i liked river song more when we didn't know as much about her, she was this mystery that intrigued me and i found fun, but the show ruined that for me when it actually tried to explain her origins but didn't giver her a more defined character as her arc went on, it just upped the 'quirky' factor as if that's a personality?

amy i never had an easy time liking, i just hated how horribly self-centered she was and how the narrative supported it. but i also stopped watching new-who during matt smith's run so maybe they were better by the end of it.

I preferred River when she was a mystery too. They should’ve left her a mystery instead of giving her this horrifying origin story.

I had a hard time liking Amy too and preferred Rory over her.

I'm not entirely sure how Amy was self-centered? Not any more than any other character.

I find them both very obnoxious
