[Interview with the Vampire]

you know something weird? pretty much any other movie and irl, I don’t find Tom Cruise very attractive. But as Lestat? ungh

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree that the look strangely fits him, although it's very much not my type and so I have no interest in him still.

I still think David Bowie should have played Lestat.

Oh yes.

Who should they get now? Tilda Swinton?

Damn. *fans self*

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
He would've been great...but then I tend to think that about Bowie in general!

I wanted Bowie in All The Things.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
He would've made an amazing Elrond in Lord of the Rings...

oo, I hadn't thought of that but he would!

At least Queen of the Damned got that right, though not much else. I sometimes watch that on mute. That Lestat is just hot.

You may (or may not) get your wish. AMC recently bought the rights to make new Films and TV series based on both the Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches and it looks like they are going to develop a TV series based on Interview with The Vampire. Anne Rice will be an EP.

I get that.

I haven't read anything of hers for such a long time now, but I remember the bits and pieces of Interview with the Vampire that are still there in my mind with fondness. And while the movie was okay, I was not impressed by the casting and that hasn't changed. If I were going to cast it now, I think I'd go for someone like Charlie Heaton or Timothy Chalamet (I know, it seems really cliché, but he's 25, is a pretty good actor, looks like my concept of Louis, has a French father, and seems to actually be able to convey pathos with it straying too far into petulance) as Louis and Daniel Sharman as Lestat.

Beauty standards were different back then and Pitt and Cruise were both considered pretty boys. Also idc what anyone else says, Cruise nailed Lestat and that was his best performance ever and if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s in his 50s now I would gladly watch him do the role again.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come on, Brad Pitt looks genuinely beautiful as Louis.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I still need to watch this movie but still recall how disturbed I felt that I found both of them very attractive like this. Sigh. But I'd be down for the beautiful androgynous people. Or guys with feminine features? Like, the vampire is supposed to be beautiful, hypnotizing, alluring. idk.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
This is so funny to me, because Anne Rice herself apparently pictured Rutger Hauer for Lestat and was super disappointed with the casting. *g*

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*googles 'young rutger hauer'*

I can really see it.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, both of them were their most beautiful in their roles here. I'm guessing you must mean a modern update of pretty?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed with "WTF, they were both considered ridiculously pretty at the time" comments.

More importantly, I didn't realize "androgynously pretty" would or should be a requirement for a vampire. I haven't read the books, but judging by the comment above that AR wanted RH, she certainly doesn't hold that opinion.

Yeah, it seems the quality she was going for was more "hypnotically intense"?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't know. I get that people's tastes vary, but I'm used to the Vampires are Dangerously Sexy theme (which I think includes both "hypnotically intense" and even "unnaturally beautiful"). But IMO, Dangerously Sexy does not equal or even include Androgynously Pretty, so it's a disconnect for me.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Tom Cruise wasn't built enough for her. She wanted a manly man with piercing eyes. When I first read about that in an interview with her (ages ago), I was surprised. I had read three of the books by then, and Lestat really didn't read like Rutger Hauer to me.
