Hmm.

I don't think it's wrong to like and want positive feedback. But if you don't enjoy writing at all without it, maybe you don't actually enjoy writing?

It's also possible to enjoy doing something, and feel discouraged after putting your heart and soul into something only to have someone go "...k."

Yes, that can be discouraging. And I have, at times (many, many times), lacked the motivation for writing, but that's really down to me and not really anything to do with comments. And part of why I enjoy writing fic is due to the thought of others maybe liking it, but mostly I write because I like to write and even if it never gets posted (like the many, many different stories I've started that live on my hard drive), I still enjoyed the process. I write because I like to write, I post because I like the idea of others enjoying what I've written and the feedback. However, I generally only post completed works and don't post my WIPs, so that might make a difference.

Oh, come off it! People can take satisfaction and enjoyment out of things that are difficult to do without positive encouragement. Needing/wanting positive encouragement doesn't mean you don't get pleasure out of it at all. It just means you benefit from some positive feedback and it's really strange people act like this is sooooo unusual.

The secret stated that without comments they don't write and it isn't fun anymore, so it doesn't seem like they are getting pleasure out of it, to me.

It's almost like for some people, even with creative pursuits, they need engagement with other people to make it worth while. It's almost like everyone has different motivations and needs and for some people the idea of engaging/talking to people about the thing they made is a source of motivation/excitement and positive interaction and we shouldn't shame them for it.

Yeah, agreed. I've written tons of things that will never see the light of day on the internet because I had a story in my head and wanted to write it down. I might show them to a friend or two if I think they might be interested but I wrote them for ME because I like writing and seeing a story take shape in words.

Other people enjoying my stuff is just a bonus at the end of the day.
