Honest question, how often do you comment on other peoples works yourself? Generally, from the authors I see complaining about comment count, they never actually do the same for other peoples works.

I know not everyone reads fanfiction as much as they write, but at the same time I wonder about the correlation of someones works who involves themselves in the fandom and those who stick to themselves.

That's fantastic!
I click on a lot of profiles because they comment on a lot of the things I like too, anytime I see that they write fic themselves I get super excited since there's a chance we see the characters the same way I do! Honestly, I am a lot more likely to comment on fics by these users if only because they seem so much more friendly/recognizable through the fics I've read. <33

I always comment as long as I liked the fic. (Doesn't have to be the "best ever" but obviously if I dislike it, I don't comment.) I do write a lot more than I read though and sometimes I write in different fandoms than the fandoms I read in.

I don't understand what you mean about the correlation part. Do you mean those who stick to themselves won't get as many comments as those who are very involved? If so, that's kind of a given.
But I also have to say that I don't like this mentality where you only comment on fics of people who comment on yours and the other way around. (That cliquey behavior you sometimes see with BNFs in a fandom.) Because in that case commenting turns into an obligation. On the one hand, I might feel obligated to comment on the fics of the person who comments on mine, even on fics whose summaries I don't like / I am not interested in. On the other hand, the comment from that person on my own fic doesn't mean as much because maybe they felt the same way about it (didn't really want to read, didn't really enjoy, but they tell me how much they loved it anyway out of obligation).

Hmm, mostly I mean that because like to find fics through users that comment on the same things I find loveable enough to comment myself. So If I recognize a username, and see them commenting on a lot of fic I really like, I'll check out their works because it would make sense we would have the same interests kinda.
The correlation comes in by the way of wondering how many people comment to be noticed, comment because they're authentic, and compared to that the people who want comments, but don't bother giving any of them away themselves.

The second part of your comment is exactly why I wanted to ask this specifically towards the OP, if the process of their writing relies on comments by the nth degree. Then would they not return the 'favour' as a sort to any fic they read as comments are so integral as a part of their own writing?
I don't write fic myself which is probably where all my misunderstanding is coming from, but not even in the way of returning comments, I'll say, but by leaving a comment on anything you thought good enough//managed to finish reading/want to inspire/want more of, simply because you know what comments might mean to the person writing it.

Ugh, sorry this makes no sense... Basically just in regard to casual readings, fanfic, WIP or not, and the sense that since you regard commenting so integral to your own writing, do you also offer the same boost to every other fic you read that you liked?

I'm not the OP of the secret, but I do agree with this secret, and comments are very important for me to keep writing too.

And my answer is yes, since I know how much comments mean to writers, I also comment on the fics I read and like.

To be honest, I can't imagine that there are writers who don't comment themselves. I think maybe it just seems that way? As I said above, sometimes I don't read in the same fandoms I write fics for. So, someone might not see writers like me commenting on other people's fics in that fandom and assume we are writers who don't comment, when in reality, we do comment, only in other fandoms.

Or, as you said yourself, the writer might write a lot of fics but not read a lot. I mean, with the limited amount of free time, sometimes it's a choice between reading OR writing and some might choose writing.
So, that's where that perception ("Generally, from the authors I see complaining about comment count, they never actually do the same for other peoples works.") might come from.

Ahh, sorry! I totally get what you're saying! This secret and a mix of recognizing other writers who feel this way that I never see around in like writers comments just spurred me on to ask!
I pretty much read fanfiction 24/7 and I suppose as a commenter more than any sort of writer, I'd definitely be more likely to comment on the fics of the individual whom I recognize than not. (which obviously you've said as much in your original reply)

So for someone who values comments on their own works so much I would imagine they would look for and try to do the same for any others they came across? Even just as a means as getting comments for themselves, or even as a general act.

You do make a great point however! I'm not about to judge someone for wanting recognition/feedback on what they write. Ahh, it's far too early in the morning for me to collect my thoughts enough to make a proper reply, but basically I do agree!

About 70% of the time I finish a fic?

Admittedly if I'm reading a multichapter story that has been posted for a while I do slip - (e.g. I recently read a 16 chapter fic in one go and left comments only on 3 chapters), but as I general rule I make a point of commenting unless it truly left me indifferent.

I only have so much time in a day to commit to fandom. I spend most of it writing and read very few fics. This is true for many prolific writers I know. I think there's a role for everyone in a fandom community, whether they are writers, artists, vidders, etc. "Feedback providers" is also a vital role. People who want to be part of a community can and should fill as many (or as few) roles as they feel comfortable with or have the time for.

The people I generally have a problem with are those who fill NO role. They neither create nor share through reblogs nor comment. I'm not going to complain about writers not commenting on other people's work when there are plenty of people who do NOTHING but consume consume consume.

I totally agree. What is really annoying about this is that I think most people in fandom actually fall under the "consume consume consume" category.

Not OP, but if I finish a fic, I leave a comment. I enjoy leaving comments, in fact. I used to hate it, but once I started writing, I started thinking about how the writer would react receiving my comment, and that made it fun.
